Arghh! I remember the weaver fish very well. When I was but a young lass, prone to a certain amount of posing and surfing on a rather lovely( back then!)beach called Porthcothan,I had the misfortune to step on one of the little blighters. The shelf of the beach was rather shallow,so I was a fair way out.By the time I had made it back to dry sand, the poison had worked its evil and I was completely paralized!Luckily I was soon rescued and carried back to the hotel. The doctor did not seem to know the cause..by this time I had no feeling below the waist..but eventually a very small puncture hole was found and the poison sucked out.I spent three days recovering..and it totally destroyed my beach cred that year!Be warned..pee in the bucket..or even better, wear something on your feet!!

I've managed to avoid them, but there are a few around the Island. Nasty little things, detirmined to put my friends in hospital the day we'd planned to go ou and do something fun.
I don't think they've been that much of a problem in recent years, though...

Well, when I met Peta at the towers, Ashley and Sam started to have a "who has come across the worst illness and nastiest animal in their travels" competition/discussion, and I said that the only nasty thing you had to worry about on the Island are weaver fish (nicknamed "sand weavers"). Peta then said that this was one of the very first articles she ever edited, so I had to search for it and have a look. I was surprised to see you here, though

Yes... it must have been one of my first efforts I think... apart from the driving in Egypt one.

Haven't seen that one... The first forums I were in were Douglas Adam's one on tea, and one on keeping dead bodies in the home for fun and profit.

Here it is: http://www.h2g2.com/F14000?thread=10643 Closely followed by: http://www.h2g2.com/A113923 on best beaches and I remember contributing a lot to the English slang forum, which has changed beyond recognition! http://www.h2g2.com/A412787 is the driving in Egypt entry which I was particularly pleased with! From small acorns eh... shazzPRME ;-)

I remember the best beaches one... I came back from uni after it had been done, and spent ages going through a lot of the forums saying how great Isle of Wight beaches were... but everyone ignored me.
