Northallerton is the 'administrative centre' of the spurious county of 'North Yorkshire'. York is the county town of the (real!) county of Yorkshire smiley - smiley

Ahhh..not quite.
Northallerton is the county town of the North Riding of Yorkshire;
Wakefield is the county town of the West Riding of Yorkshire;
Beverley is the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The City of York has never been the county town of Yorkshire. The City and County of York (a county borough) sat at the junction of the three ridings, but in none of them.

Hi All,
Well you learn something new every day. I thought the ridings were a relitavely modern creation. smiley - smiley
