I wouldn't have left well alone. 
Not that I have (or ever had) the skills and knowledge necessary for rescuing the site, but there have been a few things I was able to help with. What matters is that so many people worked together on saving H2G2. That's priceless. Sometimes too many cooks can save the broth, not ruin it.

Wow... looking back some of the negativity in that thread still packs a punch (and not a one of the naysayers is eating humble pie, it seems).
My favourite post though: "I guessing it will not be set up as an independent not for profit foundation."

It takes a lot of motivation [some would say delusional thinking] to overcome negativity. I'm tempted to think that negativity is somehow instinctive. Maybe denial is, too. The mind protects itself in mysterious ways, some of them counterproductive in the long run.
