1. Sorry to smiley - boing such an old thread, but your space does encourage boldness of this sort
2. I've just put you on my friends list, cos you sound smiley - cool, and you're doing basically the same degree as me - in fact, I think it was Birmingham's website that convinced me to do it in the first place, although I'm actually at Reading...
3. What I was actually going to say, is what kind of a freaky broadband setup do you have!? All you need is an old pentium and a network switch, and you can *all* have the connection. Right now, I'm connected via a linux box which is my 6-year-old PC - and as the only CS-type in the house, I alone am root!
4. ????
5. Profit!

1. No worries - I tend to try to get people talkingsmiley - smiley
2. Fair enough - how are you finding the course? What year are you in?
3. We don't have the old pentium or the network switch. Sure we can get these things and sure we could sort it out - but since I get 90% of the internet use as the computer is in my room and people haven't paid me back for the last computing stuff I bought for the house I don't feel inclined to. I'll sort it out when I move into my new house next year.
4. Yes but what do you do with the underpants?
5. Profit.

1. It's good to talk! smiley - winkeye
2. I'm in my third and final year, just about to have my last proper lecture, in fact. I've actually really enjoyed it for the most part - although it's been hard work, of course. Juggling organisation between 3 departments (Comp.Sci. + Cybernetics + Psychology) is great fun, too; but I have actually found that quite a few bits of the course really do cross over, which is great for getting different perspectives on things.
3. Actually, I bought all the equipment to equip my 5 housemates with internet, but only 3 of us actually use it - one's laptop doesn't have a network card after all, and another has never asked me to configure it. It was great fun finding the appropriate settings on a Japanese copy of Windows ME, though smiley - yikes
4. Use them as hats.
5. Loss.

What'd you do your thesis on? I'm just having to choose now and I'm not quite sure, it doesn't help that the psych department wants to know if I'm doing a psych or AI thesis before the AI department has its talk on thesies (is that the correct plural?) in AI

ah, yes, I had that one, too - only I had the choice of *3* departments, and they all had pretty-much non-overlapping sign-up timetables! I reckon I deserve extra marks just for *navigating* this degree (there's only three of us doing it in my year, so we tend to get rather forgotten organisation-wise...)

In the end, I did a comp.sci. one on motion detection in images - or that's what it's supposedly on, my program doesn't really do very much of anything. I just hope I can blag enough stuff into the Report to get my degree... smiley - erm

Ouch! I'd give you the degree.
Though there are only 2 people on my course - I win!

I'm likely to end up poking 5yr olds in a psychology thesis - what fun

ooh, damn you!

There were actually 4 of us in the first year, but supposed to be only two of us graduating this year - the others were signed up for "Applied" (sandwich) courses. But one's dropped out altogether and the other's dropped down to the normal 3 years.

as for poking 5-year-olds, good luck. From what I hear it's hell getting all the appropriate permissions - a lot of people have been struggling to get enough participants because they can't convince the parents to sign up. Must be kind of fun, though... smiley - biggrin

Ouch.
I was in northumberland on a 28.8 connection and didn't feel like h2g2ing on that sort of connection.

Seems I'm working on 'the computer as a participant' for my dissertation now - so no five year old poking for me. Probably for the best really.
