Cal's Journal: Any one else want a go?

We get it here in the US too.. I see it lurking on the shelf near the yeast and other such things. I've never quite learned to like the stuff though..

We have a number of folks who served with the RAF, then the RCAF, before retiring here. I easily found Vegamite among our local spreads, but really had to hunt for Marmite. In our common grocer's, it's tucked in with the baking products. I guess someone saw "yeast" on the label and assumed ...
And I like it very much, simply on toast, with a mild'ish cheese, and now even with peanut butter. (Thanks to Tsarina for that one )

There are three jars of vegemite on our store shelf, been there for a while. I have not encountered marmite, though.

I might suggest that is because the Marmite is the good stuff, and the vegamite a very coarse and poor cousin of it.

And definitely something to be savoured sparingly.

The closest local stuff I can compare it to is beef Bovril. Take about 12 ounces of the liquid form, and condense it down to about 3 ounces. A very thick 'tar' and very intensely beef flavoured.
I'm quite a fan of beef jerky, so perhaps I was already 'inclined'.

*takes the greeh away from Cal* no more for you, dear...
I'm a big fan of beef jerky and kippered beef as well, but that didn't seem to help..

It's a type of beef that's not quite as tough as jerky but darn close..

I think it's thoroughly saturated with seasonings and flavours before it's dehydrated. SO that it never truly becomes dry or tough. I'm choosy and like to make my own jerky anyway.
