h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I can't come back yet- I've still got a lot of work to do.

But I figured I'd let you know that I'm winning the battle.

According to the job offer that I got today, I am a productive member of society.

Of course, the job is in San Francisco- three time zones away from everything that's familiar. The metro stop is a few blocks away, so I'll be able to commute. If the map is right, I'll be able to see the Bay Bridge from the office windows. Benefits, living wage, full deal. This could be the best decision I ever made.

Of course, if this is a mistake, it's going to be the biggest mistake I ever made. Ever. Getting stuck on the cliff will have nothing on this. They will have to invent new words for the level of fail that I will achieve if this is a mistake.

But then if it's not, the inverse is true: every day that I live I will regret not making this "mistake." My parents, hopefully, will come around. I have no doubt that we'll fight about it, but they'll come around once they figure out that I'm not going to turn into my uncles or make any mistakes that I haven't made in the six years I've lived away from home.

For the first time in a long time, I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I'm sure it's not a train.

I haven't been on this Earth as long as you, Scan, but I know from experience that websailor is right. You always regret what you don't do way more than what you do. So for Dagda's sake, go for it! We're all rooting for you.

Wondered how long it was going to take someone to say that.

Ugh... now I know how my friend M felt when we were all pushing her to go to grad school in New Mexico. No offense guys- I really need the kick in the rear end here! But everyone's saying "Go! Go! Go!" (except my parents) and I feel like I need to sit down and breathe for a minute!

Not that what you're doing is wrong. Keep telling me to go. It's a great ego boost!

Dear Scan,

As a victim AND the culprit of damaging offspring's confidence I can honestly say 'Go for it'. Nothing is permanent but regrets might be. You won't know till you try. Parents do things for the best of motives but they are often wrong!! By the time they realise it, it can be too late.

Scan, just remember that you'll be moving a looooong way from your parents and that will almost certainly upset them. On the upside you can get pot really easily and you can always get a VW camper and/or sleep on the beach
