h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Today I reached the age of 70.

It seemed like any other day -- I washed some laundry and went to a meeting.

Then, around 7:00 P.M. I went to Caffe Nero for some Almond Cream cake and a cup of coffee. That's about as nice a piece of birthday cake as I'm likely to get.

And now I'm here in my online home away from home.

It's raining again outside as I write this.

Let me be the first here to wish you many more happy returns!

Happy birthday, young fella. Some of my best ones were solo - a nice dinner, a tipple of choice and a good book to get lost in.

We used to joke with family members by wishing them as many more years as they had lived so far. This was plausible up to about the age of fifty. But 70 more years would bring me to the age of 140. I will get so much practice at being a grumpy old man that I'll be all alone....

It's a good thing I'm not addicted to bread and butter any more.

The last President I actually liked was assassinated in Dallas. I respected Obama. I disliked Reagan while he was in the White House, but you know what? I feel nostalgic for him now. He had some things exactly right, even if he was not up to the task of using them effectively. Then again, he looks like a giant anyway compared to Lord Mudpants.

I didn't like Clinton all that much (didn't dislike him either, though), but he appointed some good people who seemed to do good work at their jobs. Nowadays, if you can name even *one* Trump appointee of distinction, you're doing well.
