There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Over the weekend I brought in the dozen or so boxes of my CD collection from the shed to the bedroom closet, after having cleared Mrs Gosho's old clothes from the floor and persuaded her to go through them and toss out anything she doesn't need or want - about 90% of them smiley - winkeye

So since she's out tonight I thought I'd have a quick riffle through them and play something as I haven't been able to get at them for more than 18 months. The first box I opened had 'In The Court of The Crimson King' (cardboard sleeve, 24 bit remaster smiley - tongueout) in it smiley - bigeyes

Where's me Gentle Giant, me Greenslade, me PFM, me Curved Air smiley - ok

I should get out my old Henry Purcell recordings (though not the Alfred Deller ones smiley - tongueout).

I have some 33 1/3 RPM LP's from the 1950s: "I go Pogo," with one track sung by Walt Kelly himself. smiley - smiley Also, the original version of "Songs by Tom Lehrer." And, the original cast recording of the musical "Little Abnere." Such treasures, eh?

My folks used to have a number of Tom Lehrer records when I was a kid, including "Songs by Tom Lehrer."

When I was sick in bed, Mom used to bring up the record player and I'd play all the records. We didn't have a TV, so it was our sole form of entertainment.

Some of Tom Lehrer's songs might have made you feel even *sicker* than you already were. smiley - winkeye Especially "I hold your hand in mine"
(Which is admittedly my favorite, but it is not for all tastes smiley - yikes)

There are some who regard Tom Lehrer as the 20th century's greatest songwriter, because the marriage of words to music is so perfect and so seamless. That would be quite a distinction if it were true....Tom himself might be too modest to claim such supremacy, though.

Going directly from adolescence to senility is something that I have attempted, too. smiley - winkeye At least Tom Lehrer and I have that much in common. smiley - smiley

Dark Side of the Goon

Vatican Rag. Say no more!

Gosho - some of those others mentioned I have never heard of. Woe is me! I thought I was reasonable well educated, musically speaking. Not that I can listen to anything right now...the dog has developed a taste for speaker cables and we have none in the house.

This means I can't listen to my Firesign Theatre CDs, or any of my Goon Show collection. And that's not good folks.

Radio 7 were broadcasting a Goon Show or two a week and then archiving them for six days for online listening - might be worth checking out the website smiley - ok

Hi, Gradient.

I can see that you have good taste. smiley - ok

I don't even make a pretense of being musically aware where nontheatrical pop music is concerned.

That said, I have no hesitation about going to movies that have rock music in the soundtracks. I have also been known to watch videos of rock concerts (Woodstock, Talking Heads, etc.). I just don't want to clutter up my house with recordings unless the music was written by people who've been at least hundred years. smiley - biggrin

Sorry, that last line should have read,

"" I just don't want to clutter up my house with recordings unless the music was written by people who've been *dead* at least a hundred years. "

Paul, the living anachronism. smiley - biggrin

Dark Side of the Goon

That's a good criteria.

For a start it means never having to own anything by Cliff Richard. Ever.

Or the Rolling Stones, although if Keith Richards ever releases any solo material he might get in on a technicality (he looks like he's been dead for a century and, as we know from Wayne's World 2, he cannot be killed by conventional weapons).

Sorry...Keith's one of my Household Gods.

I enjoyed "Wayne's World 2." smiley - smiley

I just don't get a lot of the allusions to celebrities unless they were solo artists like Elvis or Bob Dylan or Elton John, etc.

Anyway, I've realized that being dead for 100 years would be too extreme. It should be more like 30 years. Okay, so Jim Morison might sneak in under the fence on that one (if not now, then soon), but I can make peace with that. He is still revered as a poet.
