Like both names - but perhaps the first would be easier for Englanders to cope with?

Me too. That's where I got the idea from...

Can't have two names: Russian tradition dictates a first name and a patronymic based on the father's name. He's going to be Ilya (or Ignat) Vladimiravitch (have to think about that spelling too, actually) and then a really long Russian surname which is also a bug... pain to spell, so you can see why the first name has got to be fairly short.

Good thinking. That is why my first name is Jan, not Janet or Janice. I was saddled with a long name of Polish derivation. I don't even have a middle name.

I really like the tradition of patronymics smiley - ok

I was wondering why I kept picturing blonde hair - is he fair or dark or can't you tell yet?

Mostly he sleeps, actually.

He has darkish hair and blue eyes at the mo, and B is extremely happy that he has his Russian nose, but less enthused about the English chin.

I vote for Ilya, though to me Ilya first reminds me of a Russian hero. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilya_Muromets

I've always said that officially, Hati, I will swear that Ilya is named after Ilya Muromets. It's just that really...

Actually, I was telling the Star the other day that he will clearly grow up to be as cunning and sexy as Ilya K and as brave and strong like Ilya M and as creative as the various Ilya writer and artist Ilyas and nothing at all like the Ilya who is responsble for VI Lenin.
