Chas & Dave AND The Wurzels...

Post 1

Number Six

On Friday I interviewed Chas Hodges (as in Chas & Dave) over the phone and later on I met two of the Wurzels who'd come in to the Taunton studio to be interviewed down the line by Five Live.

To put it in football terms, I'm sure this must count as some sort of unlikely musical 'double' and I'm wondering what my trophy is and how I claim it.

The interview should be up on the BBC Somerset website in the near future...

It would be good, wouldn't it. Also more good news. Orange Broadband have finally got their fingers out of their collective khyber and connected me at my new flat.

They were blaming the BT engineers saying it could take up to 15 days. It nearly did, too. Thing is, these are the same BT engineers that had me connected in less than 20 minutes when I rang them telling them I'd moved.

I phoned them from work in Taunton, drove home to Langport which takes half an hour, and when I arrived I had a nice new dial tone.

This may also be because I decided to go back to square one and reconnect all the connections exactly as per the manual, even though I was pretty certain it was all OK and I'd done it a few times before. It's a few days since I last tried to do it anyway. So we shall never really know.

On the plus side, I've managed to score some free tickets to the Chas & Dave gig tomorrow night. The full interview will be on the website after I've written the review of the gig that's yet to happen. But part 1 of Chas & Drew went out on Drive tonight - for the mega-curious, if you go to the Listen Again feature in the BBC Somerset Sound section of www.bbc.co.uk/somerset then it's about one hour and 12 minutes into the Drive programme. It's preceded by 'Rabbit'. smiley - smiley

I should add that Chas was a top bloke and it was a pleasure talking to him.

I'm afraid he's STILL a Spurs fan. smiley - sorry

I met Adge Cutler years ago (obviously) when he was in Coventry. - Nutter, absolute top bloke.

About 10 years ago my wife and I were walking behind an old people's home, and performing on the patio were - The Wurzels. As we walked over to the fence my attention was drawn to an old lady leaning on a zimmer frame who was really getting down to 'Blackbird, I'll 'Ave Eee.' She was shaking everything she'd got, and I pointed her out to Mrs D. saying 'Look she's really enjoying it, who'd have thought it.'

Seconds after I finished saying this, the band reached the end of the song.

The lady carried on shaking.

She was still shaking when the concert ended. smiley - doh

I spotted this journal in your PS and had to mention this:

I saw Chas n' Dave at Glasto 2005 with a bunch of my old mates from Margate. They were absolutely brilliant. Much, much better than Clodplay.smiley - biggrin

From Margate - how appropriate. smiley - cheers

I missed them, due to having to shop for wellies at the time. But Chas reckons there were 18000 people trying to get into that tent - he'd never seen anything like it.

I took too long to write my review of the gig, so the audio of the interview won't be going up on the BBC Somerset website alongside it now. Shame 'cos it was a good interview - we really did have more rabbit than Sainsbury's, it was about ten minutes all-in. I might try and MP3-ise it and put it on to my MySpace space. Has anyone got any experience of doing that sort of thing?

I just found out something I never knew before. Chas Hodges worked with Joe Meek, and Joe Meek was desperately infatuated with Chas Hodges. The Chas I know just don't seem the kind of musician who'd be working with a producer like Joe Meek.

Well gorblimey.

That is undoubtedly the most interesting bit of trivia I'll learn all week, possibly all month.smiley - biggrin

Blimey, we don't have an entry on Joe meek.smiley - yikes

There are a lot of entries we don't have.

And I ain't the man to write 'em.
