9000 miles
Posted Apr 26, 2000
Diana set out from here (Hong Kong) on her bike last October. I've just had an email from her in Crete where she's been for three weeks stacking shelves, taking a break before pushing on home. I'm so jealous but I know that even if I'd had the money /time at her age I wouldn't have had the guts. 9000 down and about a thousand to go. Fantastic.

Idioms
Posted Mar 9, 2000
I'm _working_ on the search engine for the slef-access centre and this involves skimming every book in the place to see where it belongs . Being now stuck in to the vocabulary shelf, I've finished the section on phrasal verbs and am now into idioms proper. A splendid book called "Help with Idioms" has taught me some I didn't previously know the origins of viz: (and eg)
bark up the wrong tree
be on cloud nine
be up to scratch
carry the can
give someone short shrift
money for old rope
steal someone's thunder
and seemingly "blow hot and cold" comes from an Aesop's fable that I've never heard before either. Good eh?

Said the fly to the spider
Posted Mar 3, 2000
How do I get out of this web? Definitiely spending too much time here given that a) the research project is hotting up and b)I've just been given my renewal of contract forms and, as I want to extend, I have to produce a teaching portfolio (if you don't know, don't ask) before 14th March.

Conductors
Posted Feb 28, 2000
Went to a performance of Bach's St.John passion last night - beautifully sung/played in "authentic" style. Being too vain to take my reading glasses, I was very smug about being able to understand the German (that shows the diction was excellent). Unfortunately, the conductor was ill. He spent a large amount of time, especially during the recitative, not conducting or sitting on a bar stool for the full chorus bits. I've always suspected that a well-rehearsed choir/orchestra can get along without a conductorand this more or less proved my point.

Am I happy?
Posted Feb 21, 2000
I had to make a condolence phone call to someone I haven't actually seen for 23 years in the course of which she asked me if I was happy. I said "yes", because there were several cans of worms I didn't want to open there, but am I? I don't know.
