Black rain
Posted Aug 25, 2000
We had 300mm last night, which qualifies. Regular waterfall down the steps outside at 3am. So I shall go home early tonight to get some kip and won't be around to "hastle" anyone - I think this could qualify as a useful new word: portmanteau of hassle and haste. I'll have to come in tomorrow though - I now have TWO desks totally buried in papers.

Swings and roundabouts

Well, I have my fancy new computer (DELL Optiplex GX200it says here). I'm going to have to get the dept programmer tomorrow as these guys (very professional and pleasant as they are at 9pm) don't seem to be able to fix it so that the email comes up immediately when I open up.New keyboard and mouse, which I will try to keep grunge-free, but my games have disappeared. Just when I'd got hearts down so that I won with a score of under 10.I have been used to playing while waiting for an H2G2 thread to load, so it's a good job those guys have their act smartened up or I'd never have the patience.Nice keyboard.I'm now going to find the email and see if I can still print pictures. Back in a bit

Home thoughts from abroad

I am much more homesick here than I have been anywhere else. Wonder why.Anno Domini?
On Tuesday John told me that our student programmer was going on leave tomorrow. Hence frantic going to bed late and getting in early (and getting astoundingly wet in the process) Almost at the end of today's meetings he announced that he made a mistake and she's going next Friday. What are the penalties for killing middle aged Australians?
David, my contemporary, has what I would've called sciatica. I told him I seemed to have cured mine with HRT.
The fire bombing occurred after I left the building yesterday (Apres moi le deluge again)
I was also told earlier in the week that Hong Kong cows (I've never seen any) are full of antiobiotics. So I've been scouring places for non HK milk which is nontheless fresh.
Also found out that the reason green dragon plates are no longer made is that the glaze contains lead (this is OK for cups and bowls because they're white inside) How much lead can you pick up from a dinner plate? And why didn't the micro-wave go doolally when I put dragon bowls in it?

Let the CSC do their worst

email filed electronically and heavily weeded. Tool bars restored.
Hours of housekeeping resulting in 12 major folders left on hard disc, and backed up.Everything else got rid of to floppies only. Total of 30 discs - brilliant piece of work. Now if I get run over by the proverbial bus (or blown up in the immigration dept) the project won't flounder. So it shouldn't be beyond me to get these guiide entries fixed. Here goes!

The Immigration Tower

was seemingly firebombed today by protesting mainlanders who want to be allowed right of abode. I was there myself this morning for the couple of hours it took to get my new visa and didn't notice anything at all
So now I have a nice shiny new passport to take to Shoestring on Friday [wall to wall meetings before that] and make enquiries about varius Chinese destinations.
Apropos later travel: Edinburgh before Christmas is GRIM. New year perhaps, but I think you should visit Christina's sister in Amsterdam. They know how to do the preparation bit with a super Xmas market as I remember
