I'm _working_ on the search engine for the slef-access centre and this involves skimming every book in the place to see where it belongs . Being now stuck in to the vocabulary shelf, I've finished the section on phrasal verbs and am now into idioms proper. A splendid book called "Help with Idioms" has taught me some I didn't previously know the origins of viz: (and eg)
bark up the wrong tree
be on cloud nine
be up to scratch
carry the can
give someone short shrift
money for old rope
steal someone's thunder
and seemingly "blow hot and cold" comes from an Aesop's fable that I've never heard before either. Good eh?

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
