Jobhunting
Posted Nov 26, 2002
I have an interview lined up with a decent company at last.
Not the perfect location, but better than many, and they do produce good stuff (and it won't involve wearing anything smart). Just got to keep my fingers crossed and re-read my reference books a couple of times to brush up for the tests.

Back in London
Posted Aug 30, 2001
Returned from a successful Slovenia trip (main target cave extended from 400m to 600m deep, plenty of going leads at the bottom, several new surface leads identified). Weather was good - storms for first week, then rain once every week or two the rest of the trip. Had to haul snow out of a nearby shaft twice when water supplies diminished.
Now have to think about whether to look for a job in London or elsewhere...

Slovenia!!
Posted Jul 9, 2001
Just packing up my stuff for a Slovenia cave exploration trip - one week ferrying huge loads up a mountain, a month caving / eating / dossing on the plateau, and one last week carrying everything back down again. I missed the last few summers, so I'm making up for it by going for the full duration this time. I hope it won't rain for 6 weeks like it did last summer.

Off to Colorado
Posted Jun 14, 2001
Just getting ready for tomorrow's journey to my conservation holiday in the Rockies. *Tried* to get traveller's cheques, but thanks to NatWest being a bunch of useless ba*****ds (as usual), had to settle for cash. Hopefully, will meet the other people OK on Sunday, and get down to work Monday/Tuesday.
I wonder how warm Colorado summer nights are at 8000ft? Guess I'll know soon enough.

Back from stepbuilding
Posted May 30, 2001
I'm back, slightly fitter, but covered in itchy midge bites, and with an unpleasant cold I caught while away.
Really good week though - most of the people were interesting, the work was fulfilling, if not very scenic (there's not much view when building steps up a forest slope, except for trees and steps). The (self-catering) food was excellent - one of the guys was pretty talented in the kitchen.
Lessons learned : when doing any job involving pounding wooden stakes into the ground, don't pick the only section of path where the soil is only 6" deep over bedrock.
