Steps
Posted May 18, 2001
I'm off in a few hours to spend a week constructing steps up a mountain in deepest Derbyshire. Should be good fun - hope the weather is OK - it seems to be rainstorm season at the moment.

Time to write something
Posted Aug 31, 2000
I guess I let things slip a little - I've been somewhat busy at work, including my recent resignation(s), but I'll really try and get those articles I intended to write done soon.
I guess if I get round to going for a week's cycling and walking in Yorkshire in the near future, as I plan to, I should have plenty of time to get writing if I take an old laptop with me, expecially if it rains.

Fire!
Posted Mar 29, 2000
An interesting experience on Monday night - woken up in the flat at about 4-30am by the fire alarm. Initially assumed it was another false alarm. but it quickly became clear that the kitchen of the first floor flat above was ablaze, with plenty of smoke. Everyone got out OK, and the fire engines arrived after a few minutes (nice that it wasn't the rush hour). After a few more minutes the fire was pretty much out, but everyone had to wait in the street for an hour or so until the smoke had cleared, and everything was checked out and declared safe.
Fortunately, given the early warning from the alarm, and being safely on the ground floor, I had time to get properly dressed before leaving, as it was very cold outside.
The kitchen upstairs was pretty much destroyed, and the flat it was attached to must have been well smoked, but without the alarms, I think the occupants of that flat may well have been killed, and the flat above it could easily have gone up as well.
I got a few pints of smoky water through my ceiling, but it didn't dampen anything important, and I've had far worse from leaking pipes in the past.
All in all, a very big thank-you to the alarms and the fire brigade.

Fit? well...
Posted Mar 14, 2000
Been in the new place for a couple of weeks now. I think I *am* getting back to a decent level of fitness. I guess I'll really know the next time I have to climb a good long rope - if my legs die before my arms, I'll know I need to do some more work.
It would be better exercise if it wasn't for the traffic. Most of the way up Trinity Road, I have to ride in the 1 foot gap between the stationary cars and kerb, and only really get a chance for a decent blast in the last mile before Wandsworth Bridge. Still, I suppose it's better than being stuck on my backside in a car, it's free, about twice as fast, and I have no problems parking.

At last
Posted Feb 11, 2000
After much searching, I've found a new place to live. It's a good 15-minute cycle sprint from work, so I should be pretty fit after the first month or two, knees permitting. Not sure I'll ever make it up Malham Cove in under 5'30 again, but I suppose there's always hope.
