Good news!
Posted Oct 4, 2009
For me anyway The computing Studies degree at Birmingham only requires a b in maths .. at GCSE. So i can do maths to AS (half an a level) level and then drop it And it says its good to have some experience of writing programs and you may learn java, in which case i'll be ahead as im learning java atm and plan to pick up learning Perl at some point in the future. and my computing studies teacher gave us a test on Friday and said to me and someone else in eh class that he expected we would wizz through it ten minutes, (not quite in my case but i know what to do). and the ther person had done some programming in c, php etc etc not in epth stuff though. so i can t be doing that badly. i already have a reputation in my computing less's for asking good questions!
eventually i may be able to understand what some of the really y people mean here on h2g2

3 weeks in
Posted Sep 24, 2009
I'm now 3 weeks (ish) into Sixth from life. Overall I have to say that it's not too bad, at times it can even be quite fun.
I dropped chemistry for physics and I find physics more interesting than chemistry and its also better for any of the computing courses that I want to do. Biology is good fun and I get on well with the people sitting near me, which is always good.
Computing Studies is good, I'm learning Java at the moment I am slightly hampered by he fact i did no visual basic, but having taught myself a *very* small amount of Perl I know some of the jargon and have some of the ideas but its all good fun. if only the teacher would stop saying everything at least 3 times!!
I dislike maths as i work slower than the rest of the class and the teacher doesn't liked that but hey, its how i work and he can;t change it. I am doing extra bits out of lessons when i get the time but I'm still a bit disorganized at the moment
i should really start reading through my notes at the end of each day. I'll start tomorrow its 8 now and i have some other bits to do.

First Sixth Form Day
Posted Sep 3, 2009
Okay then here goes.
Out of the house by eight got there for 20 past and at about 9 o'clock we all got dragged inside to have a talk abouts sixth form, only the new people to the school (of which I was one) had to go down to the office and have GCSE results photocopied so they could be put into the system etc. After all the admin rubbish was done we did various bits and pieces throughout the day including an ALIS test which is meant to predict what grades you're going to get. It is supposedly very accurate. Personally I disagree with these things but more on that later. Although we didn't get the results for them back why bother doing it then?
I've also got my timetable finalised and I believe that I am doing all of the subjects that I want to, but there may be more tweaking later.
Overall not a bad day but my main problem with school is that you're not free to learn at your own pace and do what you want and learn how you learn best. You have to learn what is on thee syllabus and if that doesn't interest you at the time hard luck. This is my biggest problem with schools as I dislike this way of working. I much prefer it when i sit down in front of a computer and go and find out the information that interests me at the time. Much like the research I've been doing for my new computer, I've asked here on h2g2 (much to the annoyance of Ictoan and 2legs who I've kept pestering) and I've read reviews and so and learnt about computers as a whole, but if I'd been told to do this I wouldn't have done it so well. Ah well, not going to happen like this. If learning could be done the way I've described above I'd like it a lot more and probably remember more of it because it's actually something I'm interested in.

A hoover crossed with a computer case
Posted Aug 24, 2009
Cooling is important in computers, so people put lots of fans on. but that makes thing noisy so bigger fans are put on cos they move morea ir at slower speeds. like Aplus did with this case

Aplus kinda took it to the extreme though. The case is about 28 cm wide, 54 cm tall and 60 cm deep!! It that big becasue the front fan is 25 cm, and the side fan as 36 cm! An you can put a 120cm fan on the back. As people reviewing it have said you could be sucked in!
howevveer it would keep my room clean. And I bet its great fun to fire things across the room using the fans!
Unfortunately it cost 70 quid
