Am I right in thinking that Americans pay the check with a bill, whilst the British pay the bill with a cheque?

We pay the check with a bill at restaurants, but pay our bills with checks ... dunno how often you bring cheques to the restaurant ...

Bagpuss Posted Nov 21, 2002
Quite right. Usually restaurant bills are settled with notes or card.

Similar. At least they have something like, "I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of ten pounds," written on them.

Notes and cards? That sounds lovely, but isn't that getting a little carried away? I mean, are you even going to *see* the waitperson again?

Bagpuss Posted Nov 21, 2002
In fact the promise is made by the Chief Casshier of the Bank of England, who must get hassled by a lot of waiters and waitresses who want their money.

Have we had:
UK: Spanner
US: Wrench.
I'm not sure what a monkey wrench is called over here, a variable spanner?
On-topic Posting. Sorry.
tom Posted Nov 25, 2002
Sometimes it's called a Stilson after the name of one of the first manufacturers. Adjustable spanner also appears in books.
