Pastey

Once everything is signed and the deal sealed we'll be getting a copy of the database behind h2g2. Part of that database is a list of all user accounts, which will have the email addresses encrypted. We won't be able to unencrypt those email addresses, but we will be able to encrypt email addresses that users type in, and check those encrypted ones against the encrypted ones in the database, and if we get a match we'll store the unencrypted one that people have typed in.

Using this method we will be bringing across all accounts that people haven't asked the BBC to remove, and you won't need to re-register or create a new account. You'll merely be reclaiming your current one.

Of course, until everything's signed and we here the database and the code I can't actually build that account reclaimation part, but the BBC techs are very helpfull and the prototype is testing well.

They can just open a new user account. Their old stuff will still be there, they just won't be able to log into it.
