BBC Email - about the H2G2 move

Post 81

Effers;England.

This is insane that they keep sending out these emails. Two telling you to do nothing and now one that only turns up for some people telling you to do something.

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

It's not that it only turns up for some people. All these mails have been sent out in batches because doing 170,000 all at once would be a bit of a strain on Aunties servers.

Thanks for your clear explanation Mr. D, because it's really confusing me..I mean it took a few days before the second one could be deciphered...and then it finally turned out that we should do nothing.

But smiley - cheers

It's okay, Effers smiley - dontpanic

Incog might have received hers first because she was one of those who didn't receive the other two emails. Because of this it's possible a few others might let us know they have received this one early too. smiley - smiley

No-one will be left behind smiley - ok

Pastey

I wasn't expecting this email, and we're looking into it. Certain things were agreed, opt out system etc and this doesn't look like it fits that.

It could indeed be that this is for the newer researchers who didn't get the previous two.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. As soon as we know more we'll let you know.

Forgive me if I have not read all the hundreds (probably thousands) of posts and comments all over the BBC. smiley - sigh

There seem to be a lot of people posting links to other places which all interlace each other but don't escape the hold of the BBC. smiley - grr

Can someone post a link to the new home of H2G2 where we can go and (re)activate our registration and claim names?

There seems to be a lot of consideration given to people wanting to "opt-out" smiley - run which is fine, but what about people who want to opt IN..?

I have a nasty suspicion the BBC will close the site the same way they have with others recently. No advanced warning, it just stops working one day! That day could be Monday...

I'm not going to panic, but... smiley - wah

Just sit tight, hunny smiley - hug

Have you received the first 2 emails from the BBC? If so, you don't need to worry about anything.

We haven't moved anywhere, yet.. but the time is drawing nigh, and we will soon be given instructions of what we need to do smiley - geek

In the meantime sub to my journals, and you will be kept informed as soon as I hear anything smiley - ok

lil xx

"Can someone post a link to the new home of H2G2 where we can go and (re)activate our registration and claim names?"

Afraid not, because it's not there yet.

"I have a nasty suspicion the BBC will close the site the same way they have with others recently. No advanced warning, it just stops working one day! That day could be Monday..."

That's pretty unlikely. The whole point of the sale and the bid was that the BBC didn't want to just close h2g2.

Thank's for the comforting.. smiley - hug

OK - so it's not happened yet?

The other "improvements" announced at the same time as the "disposal" of H2G" have already happened.

Every time the BBC promise "no loss of functionality" when making their "improvements" I wake up to find something has stopped working!

Will I, for example, find at some point that I need a Twitter or Facebook account in order to migrate my ID to the new site? Maybe if I choose to migrate my DNA identity to the new home of H2G2, that will mean I have to set up a new BBC ID..?

It's not so much that I am a "glass half empty" rodent. Experience has taught me that while checking how full the glass is, it gets broken. I cut myself on the broken glass, the cut gets infected. I end up without the use of a paw!

If you see what I mean...

Hmm... I don't think anything else was announced at around the time the disposal was. We'd already known about Barleyskew for quite a while, for example.

I cannot imagine any circumstance which would require you to have anything other than a valid email address to join the new site (though being able to link your h2g2 account to Twitter or Facebook would be quite smiley - cool)

Oh on the 2nd email did say if you want to opt out reply to the email 'move' I shall just leave it, if I move, I move if I don't no skin off my nose. I ain't getting my knickers in a twist like some of you herehehe not as if I wear knickers, more of a comfort fit type boxer shorts myself 'Calvin/C'.

Dale you have received, and opened, the standard emails the rest of us have had.

Those receiving the third ones are those known to have not been on the first waves of emails. Don't worry, we haven't received a third email yet, either.

Still Incognitas, Still Chairthingy, Still lurking, Still invisible, unnoticeable, missable, unseen, just haunting h2g2

I think I should point out that I did email the PTB to say I hadn't had the second email(but I had as it had got into the spam box unlike the first one which didn't) and that's maybe why I got the 3rd email.smiley - erm
