BBC Email - about the H2G2 move
Reality Manipulator Posted Jul 26, 2011
From Jimcracker7
I’m unable to use a p.c myself till the library as closed parts down, and the p.c's are returned on, they have 15min ones always taken .
Yesterday I found that and old thread for reference done by Sef had come back to life, and a message with (Sef) at the bottom and it’s on my personal space.
It was to say Sef has not got an email for the, blobfinders, and probably the, unofficial bugfinders, so I asked Pierce the Pirate to add a message this morning, to direct Sef, if she returns, to the editors email.
This reminded me of another researcher, who most know, Wowbagger, and all the U pages of cartoons and things he as done over the years (still added to at times) I believe they are kept on an archive for , but if he has not been sent individual emails for all the many pages, and this I think would also mean, such as, Amy the ant, the heart of the art and cartoons, of the past of h2g2 could be lost.
As I said I got an email, both, but to my active, not my blueyonder I don’t have anymore. but as it doesn’t say with account it is, and I must one more long forgotten, account over the years, I used active for,
I see from the threads that some others are not getting the email, if this is happening to users still with the same emails, but not at the moment active on h2g2, they will be unable to return.
What the email should have said is to return them with the accounts and the U numbers to confirm which you have and still want to hold onto, other than the main one. We are left to guess which it’s for if we have more than one.
And why aren’t the editors or someone watching the threads and coming on to clarify whets going on. They, don’t do anything, they have lost their influence. The encrypted will mean if I'm right and it’s only for one main account, all others will be lost, after the transition period.
To Lil, if I’m right wont you or others have some personal contact with such as TB Falsename and Zendevil, and their relatives, to let them know to access the accounts, or emails to ask the h2g2 editors, to email them as the person, to keep them alive, to live on in the h2g2 old and future.
There is no way that one I knew that left the h2g2 for the Telewest, Virgin Media will get their emails, as most if not all will have changed there system, or box, and the new boxes don't have emails now, if mine goes again, I lose all three emails.
I've been around since 2002, but my personal space says 2003.as long as I can access at the library later on, I will always be here, lurking, or adding a bit now and then to threads at the library. but I don’t manage to get about so much now, so if the h2g2 goes well, I might think about another p.c, or laptop, . Bob, have you checked your settings to see which email account you used with the BBC iD? Is it still current?

Ahhh! I've got a THIRD email.
Hello XXXXXXXX,
The text of the second email (they seem to be sent out at different times due to the large volume of them, so we're sorry if there was a bit of a delay).
However, please do reply to this email and let us know if you'd like your email address to be passed to the new owners. If not, we will assume you do not want your email address to be passed on in encrypted form to the new owners and we will not email you again when H2G2 moves to its new home.
Kind regards,
h2g2 Editors
So I had to reply to THAT one.

They're now using an opt in system? That is completely insane and means we will lose huge numbers of researchers
I just got an email from h2g2 Support about a bug I reported. Only I reported it a month ago and they'd already replied at the time.

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Jul 29, 2011
It doesn't really matter whether it's an opt in or opt out, because all we were talking about was the transfer of personal information to the new site. The new site couldn't use the personal information unless the researcher chose to register with the new site anyway, so they still had to opt in.

Gnomon, it's the people that are offsite currently but come back in four or five months time. Those people's details will have been lost. To what extent that's a problem I'm not sure, but my understanding is that it's better to have as many people as possible registering on noohootoo via their bbcID details. Otherwise there are issues around validating who owns an account.

My problem is that I trust Pastey and the Tech Team, and I trust the current Eds and Nick Reynolds to an extent (allowing for them having to take otherthings into account not just the site's wellbeing). But I don't trust the BBC. It makes me nervous when I see them being a bit naff with this stuff.
