I've had two Macs in my time. Fun to drive, but so expensive! And software's hard to come by. For instance I use Word all the time and that would mean I would have to buy Office for the Mac, about £400 or more, last time I looked.
And unfortunately the iMacs are so ugly, whereas the first ones were so beautiful. (I had one)

...second year I dumped my vcr, digital tv decoder and monitor
...bought digital tv receiver / recorder for my mac
...connected the mac to my hd tv saved about another 25%
I have similar now pheloxi, I got a free BT Vision digital box system that works through the broadband hub with all our freeview channels as well as an on demand system if you want to use it. There's 100's films, documentaries etc to choose from as well as scores of other TV channels. Being a pay as you go service it's better than being locked into a fixed contract. With the broadband phone system, both fixed and mobile I save several £100.00 over a 12 month period. All phone calls are free on the landline, I have free calls on the mobile upto 200 minutes as well as free text msgs.I can even do video calls via the TV though haven't got round to setting that up yet.
Having been with BT for 30 years I do get some 'special' deals as well which helps.
Fortunately I don't need the PC operational for the digi box system, just need the home Hub on.

Thanks for the tip pheloxi! I think that Word is the best Word Processor and I use it a lot. I'm very used to it. But if I changed to a Mac, which I almost did last time, I'll have a go at these free office suites before investing. Thanks for the links
Does the Apple Mini work with ordinary monitors? In the very old days you had to get a Mac monitor as well. I'd be much more interested in the Mini than in the present ugly iMacs if it did.
As I said, Macs are much more fun to drive!

Can i join the "dodgy wotsit won't squeak to the thingummy" club please? Good to see you survived ST!
Try doing all this in French: impossible! I have had a tame in who said (for the techie ones)
*memory was only 128 MoRam
*Hard disk is empty
Eek, sounds not too nice. He tweaked some things while i shivered in the corner & announced "You now have 284 memory, but you must defragment regularly, it is very naughty not to do this." But he reckons beast will live.*phew*
So, i am Defragmenting even as we squeak...i think...it's been at it all day & i keep getting pop up messages in French asking me "Yes, stop, or cancel" Since i haven't a clue what they are saying i just click at random, it's like playing a pinball machine.
I seem to be able to access internet (hootoo, Google etc) faster, but can't respond to email at the moment. (If all else fails, i may have to abandon zendevil addy for the hotmail one temporarily; but maybe it will be OK tomorrow. I hate having to use Hotmail!)
Poor Lil: communicator of "me beastie died" from us! "don't shoot the Messenger!" (i nearly texted you earlier too!)

I suppose there are people who like fiddling with the computer for its own sake, just as there are people who'd rather work under the hood of the car than take it out for a drive. This is where I brace myself for the next round of havoc that's going to require manual corrections... ...Whheeew...
