"take my hand" she whispered, and so i did.

"where are we going?"

"shhh; you'll waken the monster. you have to walk quietly"

wonder

it was during the second half i think; just before the game was won for sure and whilst there was still more than a trace of ambiguity about the subliminal loyalties of the referee (which both ultimately and thankfully turned out to be crayoned in tones of green white and gold); it was just at that moment that i looked out my window and saw a robin smiling through the window from his perching place amid the bitter cold and the sound of his song moved me and suddenly i was lost in wonder; it's funny how the beauty of small things can caress your soul on a sunday

tuesday night

half a bottle later
when the moment was beginning to subside into history
i remembered your smile

how is it that you hold my heart captive
after all the bleeding of time?

i remember once cutting a copy
of the key to the matrix of longing
that makes up my soul
and laying it on a table between us
while we were eating italian
on the night after nine eleven
when passion was high
and the deep inside of all that was ever us
had somehow worked its way to the surface....
you probably kept it in your handbag
along with the spare key to home
that i gave you in case i ever locked myself out

but i digress

tonight your smile absorbs me
like the shine from some dead star
that gave up its ghost
thousands of aeons ago
whilst its light kept on travelling

metaphors fail me

friday

i began the day by lecturing to a bunch of fresh faced dutch undergraduates (final year i believe) who are in dublin as part of a "recruiting exercise" being undertaken by our Rotterdam office...when i asked the (equally fresh faced) event organisers what the hell the whole thikng was about they told me without a trace of irony that "maybe we will be able to recruit one or two of them when they graduate"....corporate pockets are indeed magnificently deep....

now i was trying to calculate the cost of bringing 18 graduates and 4 junket organisers across feom Rotterdam to stay in a dublin hilton for 4 nights...and even allowing for the fact that they might have had to stump up the cash to pay for their own condoms (available in most night club restrooms)it felt like a very big number....

hmmmm ... maybe i'm just jealously remembering with a manufactured nostalgia the days when even a nonchalantly waved second class honours degree in philosophy wasn't enough to gvet you a cup of coffee in the career's adviser's under stair waiting room.....

times change eh....

monday reflection

i had a moment of epiphany
on saturday just before lunchtime
on the front steps of woolworths
where i had been trying to get some crunchy nut cornflakes
but had been frustrated by a lack of ready cash
and a sales assistant who did not understand handguns
and so had not been impressed by my urgent mumbling
that this was just the last trickle of violence
before a permanent power sharing solution was enacted
thus leaving me groping for self authentication
and worried about the economic consequences
of having to work for a living
now that my guns and roses days were gone
anyway
the ephiphany
which i was going to mention to you
was this
that i don't really like crunchy nut cornflakes anyway
too many pieces stick in your dentures
and anyway they are not as crunchy as they were
back in nineteen ninety three
