Got up at 4 am today to take my parents to the airport. They're off on a cruise for the next two weeks to points south and tropical.

The world is truly a different place at that hour - nobody is about except for a very few cars. It's kind of neat to be the only car on an entire span of highway. Or perhaps I'm just sleep-deprived?

My eldest performed today in a select choir of elementary students from across Dauphin County.

There were only about 10 students named from her school to take part in the choir and it was quite a show. Some of the music was beyond me, but the kids did a great job with it.

Their program included:
Bashana Haba'ah - a Hebrew song;
A Zing-A Za - a Brazilian folk song;
Sunga Musoro - a children's song from Zimbabwe;
La Paloma Se Fue - a children's song from Puerto Rico;
Song for the Mira - a contemporary folk song in the Celtic style
The Storm is Passing Over - an African-American hymn.

And afterwards we all went out to dinner at her favourite restaurant - which was almost as exciting for her as the concert.

Today I took a half day of vacation to attend my daughters' parent-teacher conferences at their school.

It's easy to forget how wonderful your children are when you are picking up their socks from the middle of the floor. But I feel truly blessed to have two such fine young ladies for daughters.

Their teachers had nothing but positives to say about them - academically and as citizens of the school.

I credit at least part of their success to a lack of television in our home and a strong emphasis from me on reading and playing games. I really think it makes a profound difference in kids if they're exposed to books and problem-solving games at an early age.

Celebrated my mother's birthday at her favourite restaurant.

It's a somewhat fancy place that state legislators and the governor sometimes visit (with lobbyists footing the bill of course!). The girls got dressed up and exhibited their 'best manners'. And a good time was had by all.

No famous politician sightings - so a perfect evening all around! smiley - winkeye

Took the children to the opening night of our local high school's production of 'The Music Man'.

It's a fun show if a little dated in places. Still, with two girls who are gifted singers/musicians it's nice for them to see an outlet for their talents.

It is very awe-inspiring for a tone-deaf person like myself to see high schoolers (15-18 year olds) perform at such a very high level.
