E G Mel

I'm still about, on and off, I've just started my PhD so h2g2 might find itself moving to the bottom of the pile as things get heavy but for the moment I'm still here!

How's things with you?

And why is it telling me you posted months ago when it's only just popped up on my convos list!?!! smiley - erm

E G Mel

Hi Alex,

What subject did you graduate in? I did my first degree in Electronic Engineering with French and I've now started a Doctorate in sign language recognition using computers.

I chose the name E G Mel when I was about 13, so many years ago, it has stuck though and I now use it whenever I'm online.

I'm afraid that I don't use MSN to chat so if you want to talk to me you'll have to reply here.

At the moment I'm working in Guildford UK at the university of Surrey and living in Petersfield with my boyfriend, it takes me about an hour to get to university each day as I have to take the train.

Nice to speak to you.
Mel

i major mechanics engineering in northeastern university. i am a junior from shenyang, the capital of liaoling province .i am fascinated with english, that is why i am frequently logged on bbc site to meet friend wherever they live, whoever they are.i am glad to make friend `provided that they are a person with kindness and faithful character.i am living on campus now. the weather is looking up because of there is a first snow at this winter that occured several days before.what about you these days.the education of China is so competitive that drive me to mad, exaggerated speaking.the christmas is invasion ,so do you ready to it.i guess you are very happy when it is coming, right.personally, there are seldom opportunities for chinese student to communicate with foreigner in mainland ,especially in north of China,in spite of many foreigner reside in beijing.i am dedicate most of my time to prepare the entrance exam for postgraduate.i am getting up before 6am and go to bed after 11 pm,quite amazing, right.i am very jealous of your career.working at university is a ideal occupation.do you like it.what's your opinion about the test of BEC.to introduce it to me,would you.i wonder why so many people are reluctant to talk via MSN,especially person who speaking english.would you mind introducing some friends of you to me and sending me their informations in detail to my mail [email protected] or [email protected] doesn't matter whether or not you send it to me.the crucial thing is that i make a friend with you.let's keeping in touch each other.
the local time of UK is 9 hours behind beijing 's ,so you must lay on the comfortable bed when i send it to you . ÔÙ¼û

My Boyfriend studied Mechanical Engineering too, he said it was really difficult smiley - erm

I like languages too, I speak French as well as English and I am learning British Sign Language as part of my research it's facinating. smiley - smiley

Over here the time before Christmas is crazy, everyone is trying to buy presents and arrange holidays, it's almost as if everone has forgotten that it doesn't matter how much you spend so long as you give your time to friends and family smiley - sadface

We have had a little snow but it doesn't last, it melts almost before it touches the ground. Though I think that this is a good thing otherwise the trains would stop running and the roads would get blocked as the British can't cope with snow smiley - winkeye

I think the internet is great for meeting new people and talking with forigners, especially to practice languages, I sometimes practice French with Friends here on h2g2.

I find it interesting that you have an exam to take before you start your post graduate degree, is your first degree not a good indicator of what you can do? In Britain we have a problem because so many people are doing degrees and now it is difficult to tell who is the best person for the job as so many applicants have top degrees. Unfortunately I don't think it is because the students are getting more intelligent but more likely because the degrees are getting easier smiley - sadface

When chatting via MSN you both have to be available at the same time. I fit in this sort of chatting in my coffee breaks which probably occur while you are sleeping! So you can see how difficult it would be for us to use MSN. I also find that if I have MSN on at work then I don't get a lot done smiley - blush so I try not to log in too often!

If you want to find friends over here then maybe you should try joining some of the clubs on h2g2 and meeting people that way. A lot of us aren't very good at 'pen friends' so I wont give you people's details as they probably wouldn't reply smiley - sorry

Anyway I must get back to work now.
Speak to you soon.

smiley - smileyit seems like you have no other choice but to get to work by train.it is the first choice for people live far more their work place.personally, the british traffic is famous all around the world for its overcrowding and low efficiency.so people have no other choice but to work by train because of taking by train to their destination is so convenient and fast.what 's your opinion concerning the situation of tranport in UK.it is relatively difficult for chinese student to get futher education due to many many students prefer to receive higher certificate rather than to get involved in society with no competitive diploma at once.you must be prepared sufficiently before school give you an opportunity.it is not like your country to get a certificate easily.you are certainly preparing your christmas before it approaching.did your boyfriend assisted you to ready it.
it doesn't matter not using the MSN between you and me because of sleeping and preparing for exam that in spite of taking place in one more year.how could i log in h2g2's club and meet people. smiley - smiley

hey smiley - smiley have you ever been to China.do you interest yourself to a foreign country, especially some Asia's country.i have heard of you have great interest with foreign language.have you got an idea about learning chinese,if that case i could teach you as much as possible.i occasionally encounter some british people via msn before i went to bed and it often occur at night, especially at 11p.m here. that demonstrate i still have chance to come across british people at night while you are engageing in your routine work or enjoying your coffee break.so you can tell me through my email if you like.personally it is easy for chinese student to calculate complicate dates of mechanical engineering with pen ,but it is hard for them to do some experiments ,maybe because of some reasons such as, lack of education funds and students offer their priority to exam .exam oriented is prevalent in china. many many people dedicate most of their time to get powerful diploma no matter how difficult it is.the french and english are so much alike.so you wont spend extra time studying it,right.i wonder if the difference of custom between countrys result in so many british people are reluctant to talk to chinese people in spite of these chinese want to talk to you with great enthusiasm .why so many foreigner refuse to offer their time and seems like looking down upon chinese student,my classmate told me.maybe it is prejudiced for my classmate to evaluate that way.do you like to talk to me?smiley - blush

I haven't been to China but Andy has for work, he will hopefully start learning Chinese next year sometime. I'd love to visit Asia but at the moment I can't afford it so I have to make do with the photos that Andy brings back!

I tried to learn Japanese one and found it really difficult, it was so tonal and the structure was very different from anything I'd learnt before. As much as I'd love to be able to speak Chinese I don't think I have the time or the patience to learn at the moment!

British people often don't like to talk to foreigners because they are lazy. They don't like to have to make the effort to understand English which isn't perfect of discuss things which to them are everyday issues. Some British are different and are interested in other cultures. I like to talk to foreigners partly because I enjoy learning about where they are from and partly because I liked it when French people helped me practice my French!

I don't think the British look down on other cultures, but you must understand that for every Briton there are over 20 chinese people so we don't always have the time to talk to everyone who asks us too. Also it's not just the chinese who want to chat, since English has become the un-official international language there has been an increase in the amount of students wanting to learn English. Also I have received some fairly un-inviting posts asking me to chat, they don't contain anything that can start a conversation and when I replied the other person didn't seem interested in holding a proper conversation.

Basically if people try to chat by saying 'hey, I'm from china/france/mexico/etc and I want to practice English please chat with me' then it's very difficult for us to start a conversation. When you started chatting to me you told me where you were, and you asked me some questions which I could answer in my reply, then when you wrote again you chose interesting topics and told me things about China and asked me questions about here. You made it easy for me to continue the conversation.

If you want to get more involved on h2g2 and start chatting to more people here then I would suggest a couple of things:

1. Click the 'my space' link on the left hand side of this page. Scroll down to where it says 'Edit Page' on the right hand side and click that link. Write something about yourself so that people can see who you are and where you're from. Maybe you could put some interests in as well and the fact that you want to learn English and are looking for people to talk to. When you have done this then you will find that within a few days someone will come and leave you a message and you should be able to reply there and talk to them as well.

2. Then start investigating some of the forums on h2g2.

smiley - ok If you're interested in Science there is Science Explained (SEx for short) A4108330 where people ask question about scientific things and everyone tries to find the answers.

smiley - ok For general chat there's Ask H2g2 <./>askh2g2</.> where you can ask the community any question, like 'what's the weather like where you are?' or 'Are you a student?' or 'Do you have any pets?' You can answer any of the questions asked too as they are for anyone to join in.

Don't forget you can find out more about a person by clicking on their name (when it's a link) which will take you to their personal space where you can leave them a message.

Finally, so you can keep track of all the conversations you're taking part in there is the 'My Conversations' link on the left hand side of your page. If you click it now it will tell you that you are in this conversation and that there are no new posts. Every conversation you join or start will be listed there and it will tell you if there are any new posts. smiley - goodluck Good Luck and let me know how you get on.

The culture varies from one another.let's take chinese practice for example.many many chinese peoples, especially college students are more likely to talk each other in chinese via QQ,a famous channel for communication,in order that they can entertain themselves and alleviate pain from their working.it may is the chinese traditional custom that people are be able to get a chance of talking with stranger easily, regardless who they are.you may wonder how can they continue their conversation without introductions ,their hobby and interest.the talking in china will prove convenience and availability, and slowly they can know each other.in china, people are reluctant to leave messages through email,so the QQ or MSN is considered to be the most fast way to meet people.some chinese people are short-temper to everything .so they cannot afford extra time to wait a letter .only thing can they do is that receive instant reply.
that's why so many chinese people choose this way to chat.there are almost thousand millions of chinese use QQ.personally i object to chat in this way.smiley - smiley

i didn't get accustom to leaving message at first, but everthing will be changed.so i will develop a good habit that convey my idea and show my feeling by mailing letter through website.
it is a general phenomenon that there are lots of obstacles and difficulties faced up to you because you are an english speaking person, and the situations of other countries are in common.the Asia 's culture is different from britis and other conturies.you may study japanese very hard, but i am not.without learning and studying japanese before,i could read some part of articles in japanese.for chinese student ,it is easy to study japanese.many vocabularies of japanese had been borrowed from chinese, that is why i can read it in spite of i couldnot pronounce it.how did your japanese progress.can you read articles.
