Australia Day. Although the day dawned bright and clear, by lunchtime it had clouded over and started to try to rain. We celebrate the national day of a country which prides itself on its burning sunshine in gloomy, overcast and wet conditions. Seems appropriate, really.
The national holiday, combined with the wet weather, has meant that today has been spent inside tapping at the computer, rather than being out doing other interesting things. At least, however, we don't have to work...

'Tap dancin' on a land mine'

Just been out to see some friends, who weren't where they gave me the impression they would be. The upside of this is that it gave me a great excuse to have a good feed of sushi at a food bar in the local mall, as well as to ogle a lot of young women, which is never a bad thing, I think. I like Fridays.
All that remains now is to prepare for the party tomorrow night - hence staying up late and listening to Aerosmith on the stereo, which (thank heavens) still works. The connection to the 'net from the local ISP is a bit iffy, though: it's taken three local phone calls to log in tonight, and at that rate the huge local call phone bill we had last time will not become any smaller. I wish the Australian state telecommunications carrier - which is what it really still is, in spite of all share floats to the contrary - would get its act into gear and make ISDN lines available to the average punter.
*'Cause you had me in deep with the devil in your eyes...' - and now you should know which record I'm listening to!*

Weather: gorgeous, but HOT!
My underarms are sodden, but they don't seem to smell too bad - this, of course, from a man who has just finished enjoying garlic soup for lunch, again... I will have to investigate whether or not the air conditioning's working today, soon.
Life seems to be determined to smell at one of two ends - "why is it so?". JSM was a very great man, even if I am the only one who seems to remember him.
I wonder whether Kate's ever coming back...

Having written "1999" in the 'year' slot once already this week, I'm being extra careful now...! Bubster the indubitable, once again, pointed this out.
Another jam was had last night at our place, although this one involved more players and instruments, including drums and bass, and was much more heavioly jazz-influenced, if not to say jazz-driven, due to the predilections of the drummer and the bass player. It was playing of good standard, however, and all the improvising actually began to sound good in places. It was nice to sit down to eat dinner, at a table, while a band played decent music for me!
Following the jam, the musos who were left behind (the others had to move on), and me and my flatmate's girlfriend, lay out on the front lawn under a clear night sky in warm conditions, watching the stars and shooting the shit. I fell asleep on the lawn for a while, which made waking up a bit odd. I must have got to bed in reasonable shape, however, because I awoke this morning at half past five without the impulse of an alarm, which was fortunate, as I had forgotten to set the clock.
The weather today reflects the way it was last night. I even managed to hang out, after re-rinsing, the clothes I had originally washed on Sunday, before jumping on the bus and getting to the closest shopping mall to work in time to have a good cup of coffee before getting in to work itself. Work is proving to be much better than I thought it would be.
The only palls on the week so far have been that I was not paid for my work last week - which was my own fault: I didn't get my claim in early enough - and that I now have conflicting invitations for Saturday. Thankfully, however, I have saved enough money to survive until next week, and I know which of the Saturday gatherings I would rather attend.
All that would make the week better is a little time to ride my bike.

*This report brought to you with the instigation of bubster j. bubstabble, esq., motivator and conciliator, extraordinaire...*
The jam went well, although there were only two members of the band actually turned up for it. This was unfortunate in that a band without a drummer is at a significant disadvantage, but fortunate in that it meant that the two die-hards got sick of it fairly early (i.e. about 11 o'clock), and went home, or just to bed. They played some half-decent blues-style rock, in an experimental sort of way. It was interesting, but wasn't going to stop me from going to bed to finish reading "Rock 'n' roll babes from outer space" again, which I eventually did at about midnight. Reading about jams while listening to them and trying not to disturb the local guitar heroes with guffaws of laughter was an interesting experience, too...!
The weather is superlative.
This morning I managed to drag myself out of bed early enough to get to work by half-past eight, even with a back-step to pick up my blood testing machine and insulin pen, which I managed to forget to pack first time around in the vagueness of post-jam morning mental cloud. I had already managed to get a new load of articles to the super-editors, even while the jam progressed last night, so I was feeling virtuous, as well. Even with the back-step, I still managed to get from Dickson to Civic, back again to Dickson, back to Civic before finally making my way to Woden for work, within an hour - which meant that I only used one of the trips on my multi-trip ticket. I was highly impressed by this. Finally, even with the frustration of having to return to the house to pick up insulin etc., I was mollified somewhat by starting to read "The long, dark tea-time of the soul" - picked up on impulse as I walked out the door for the first time this morning - again.
I like working with Mr. Adams...
