'Tap dancin' on a land mine'
Hypoman Started conversation Jan 21, 2000
Just been out to see some friends, who weren't where they gave me the impression they would be. The upside of this is that it gave me a great excuse to have a good feed of sushi at a food bar in the local mall, as well as to ogle a lot of young women, which is never a bad thing, I think. I like Fridays.
All that remains now is to prepare for the party tomorrow night - hence staying up late and listening to Aerosmith on the stereo, which (thank heavens) still works. The connection to the 'net from the local ISP is a bit iffy, though: it's taken three local phone calls to log in tonight, and at that rate the huge local call phone bill we had last time will not become any smaller. I wish the Australian state telecommunications carrier - which is what it really still is, in spite of all share floats to the contrary - would get its act into gear and make ISDN lines available to the average punter.
*'Cause you had me in deep with the devil in your eyes...' - and now you should know which record I'm listening to!*

sounds, to me, like there's a lot of partying going on over that way. Good thing it's the weekend or you would have trouble.
Btw, am I to understand you're in a band?

Hi Daisy - I was just over at your place looking at pictures. Fortuitous timing, I think.
I'm not actually in a band, although I do play guitar well enough to keep people entertained should the occasion demand. The band in this case is my flatmate's - and a reasonably good experimental jazz/rock fusion outfit they are, too. I think there's going to be another jam on at our place tonight, so I'll let you know tomorrow if that opinion has to be revised...
The partying going on is just summertime asserting itself at last - the weather has not been conducive at the right times for far too long. Now there are three or four parties in a row lined up, and good weather for all of them is probably too much of an ask. The party on Saturday night did turn out well, though.
It's odd how the sexes have separated again - they seemed, during my early twenties, to "come together" much better than they do now. Now, you go to a party and it seems that the boys and the girls divide into sexually segregated groups for extended discussions about what each of the group is doing, without ever enquiring of the other group. A curious phenomenon, that. I don't know whether it's general, either, or whether it just reflects the cliquey nature of the people I was associating with on Saturday.
Anyway, enough of my impressionable rambling. You a player yourself...?

singer, actually...but I do play the tambourine and hand drums when the urge strikes.
I used to sing with a trippy Dead-Head type band several years ago, but the kicked me out for partying too much.
Concerning the sexual segregation you mentioned; if everyone was talking to only the people in their own group of friends, then don't you think it reflects on friend choices and not the party itself?
Did that make sense?
All of my friends (with the exception of Amanda) are men and I like it that way. Although, I must admit, it's rather hard finding a date when all the men I know see me as one of the guys. But I do agree with your statement that the sexes have seemed to split over the decades. Good observation. I guess it was kind of hard to make conversation with women at that party if they weren't mingling much, huh?

Hypoman Posted Jan 25, 2000
Yeah, that makes sense. That's what I meant by questioning the generality of the observation. It is interesting, though, from a purely detached viewpoint!
I know the problem about finding dates - an awful lot of my friends are women, too, and I'd find it very hard to ask any of them out, even if I wanted to. It does make conversation kind of hard: you talk to who you're comfortable with, I guess. Becoming comfortable with somebody new seems to be more effort than many are willing, or even want, to make.
How could you be kicked out of such a band for partying too much? Careerists, tsk! I sing a bit, too - you can't play guitar solo and not: it just gets a bit boring. I'd love to get into choral music a bit more, but getting a quoir - or even a barbershop quartet - together is almost impossible, it seems. Possibly too many egos to massage...

I partied so much that I didn't show up for rehearsal for, oh say, 6 weeks. I just forgot (or got sidetracked).
The only choirs really available to people nowadays are in churches. And you can probably forget the barbarshop quartet deal. It's been tried, and failed miserably I might add. Remember Rockapella?
Yeah, I think they're all booked up with their appearances at Six Flags and the likes.

That's the sort of attitude to band practice that I really approve of - unless it's my band, of course...!
I don't actually remember Rockapella - who're they...?
'Tap dancin' on a land mine'
Daisy Posted Jan 25, 2000
they were an acapella pop group back in the early 90's...boy, did they bomb!!!
by the way, can I ask you a question?
'Tap dancin' on a land mine'
Hypoman Posted Jan 25, 2000
You can ask me any question, Daisy - I just can't guarantee that the reply will be truthful (or punctual...!)!

Hypoman Posted Jan 25, 2000
Don't worry, I can give you a truthful reply on that one! It will take a bit longer than I have at present, however (work's just finished, and I have to get home for gym!).
Hold that thought, and I'll reply in about three hours or so...!

Fun for me too, Daisy!
Anyway, the name came about because I am IDDM diabetic. For several years, I've been a living advocate of the tight metabolic control which was demonstrated by the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial during the 80s and 90s in the US to have beneficial effects on complications in later life. The price to be paid for such tight control, however, is the odd hypoglycaemic episode.
When I was volunteering at Diabetes Australia-NSW (the local diabetics advocacy group - similar to Diabetes America in the US) I encountered a rather strongly opinionated woman who chided me for being hypo "all the time": hence, Hypoman. I must admit I found it rather insulting at the time - although this was more because of the context in which the name was given than because it was strictly inaccurate!
I just thought, when I moved into h2g2 and needed a pseudonym, that this was one of the more enigmatic ones I could use, and which I could easily remember. The others to choose from ("Happy", "Smiley" and "Elly") were not quite so enigmatic, nor quite so distinctive!

Daisy Posted Jan 25, 2000
I don't think I want to call you that name after such a bummer of a story. And your real name would be...?
'Tap dancin' on a land mine'
Hypoman Posted Jan 25, 2000
Believe me, I don't think it's a bummer of a story - I've always been diabetic, and I must admit that I take some pride in being able to use so effectively something which was meant to be disparaging!
The other thing is that that sort of insult is fairly typical behaviour in Australia, and having been given by another diabetic, was somewhat easier to take than it might have been from somebody else - my family, for example, would never have tried that.
Now I just think the name's funny, so I'm not planning on changing it any time soon. In this place, I only have one name! I'll tell you my real one, but that would require going somewhere else...!

Thanks, it's a gift plus, I got sucked into Absolutely Fabulous.
As far as talking in other places, I don't know where else to find you other than here. Any suggestions?

I'd resist AbFab if I were you...
I might have to set up a new Hotmail account to manage that - my present one identifies me all too easily, although not by the name I go under here! Easy enough to fix, so I'll let you know when it's up and running.
In the meantime, here's some light music...

stop being so aloof...just give me your current e-mail...I promise I won't tell anyone *crosses heart*

Now who's being aloof...?
All right, Daisy, you've won me over with your incredible openness and generosity:
