Journal Entries

24/05/99

I know, I know .... it's been ages since I added to this journal, but I can't be bothered writing about the average day to day, but today I have something to write about.
I went today to the State Library for the opening of an exhibition in memory of some of Sydney's eccentrics.
It was very interesting but sadly, very NORMAL - and they left out some wonderful people, there was no mention of the Eternity man, or the Birdman of Bondi or so many others.
Still, I suppose they only "displayed" the ones they had material on, but I would have thought that some of Madam Lash's more spectacular outfits would have been a bit of fun.
It was a bit strange too, the curator made a speech about the exhibition and every time she made a general remark about eccentrics she looked straight at me, I told her afterwards that while I might look a bit eccentric I am really quite normal - it's the rest of the world that's strange. Besides, I'm still alive and not rich enough to be eccentric - in the eyes of the establishment the poor are simply mad.
Don't really know whether this is the place to discuss this - from my exploration of this site it seems that eccentricity is the norm here - does that mean that anyone normal who uses these pages is mad? Dunno ....

16th May 1999

This should have been done last night but I had so much trouble getting in and then when I did get in it wouldn't let me post any replies.
Don't know if it is server problems - but it is FRUSTRATING!!
Had a wonderfully decadent day yesterday - went to the theatre TWICE - saw a production of "She Stoops To Conquer" with established actors (including Leo McKern) - not good, very flat. and badly acted (McKern forgot his lines on more than one occasion)
The second play was "Ship of Fools" by Andrew Bovell - a new Australian playwright - a young cast in a tiny little theatre - brilliantly acted and staged on a stage the size of a pocket handkerchief. The play was emotionally charged, entertaining and thought provoking - everything theatre should be.
The mainstream theatre could learn a lot from the smaller theatres. Thank goodness for the gutsy people who will try something new (and yet eminently accessible).

Day 3

13/05/99
Tried to do this yesterday but had so much trouble signing in and changing screens that I finally gave up - managed to post a couple of replies - but I think that they must have been having trouble with the server.
Teething problems are to be expected - especially with a site as all encompassing and potentially popular as this one.
I can see me becoming really addicted to h2g2. Don't want to talk about my drab day to day existence here, I'll leave this journal for really interesting things.
Last night went to see "Boxing The Pony" a live one woman show by Leah Purcell, a young aboriginal woman - extremely talented - writes, dances, sings, writes her own music - VERY impressive.
It was autobiographical and yet universal in its themes - Leah started her life with an alcoholic mother and a father who, in a tiny North Queensland town had 2 families, one white and one black - everyone knew but no-one mentioned it.
She had a child at 16, an abusive partner and generally a BLOODY hard time - and yet she escaped and triumphed. The show was sad, funny, inspiring and entertaining, Highly recommended!! Leah Purcell will, hopefully, grace our screens and stages for many years to come.

Day 1

11/05/99
Well ... finally registered and naturally my first entry was about me!!
Self centred? YES Egotistical?? OF COURSE But the most important thing on the planet for me is ME!
Without Me there would be no-one to write about my knowledge and my eperiences - hell, if it wasn't for me I would have no experiences!
Still thinking about my next entry..... maybe write about where I live???
Dunno .......
