Sub-Letting
Posted Sep 17, 2009
After too much time away from the fold, I have returned for some active subbing duties - largely because they always seem to get me in the mood for some more serious writing efforts. I do, however, have to get my subbing into gear, which sometimes can be a problem as well - the world contains too many distractions by far for anyone to do anything seriously for more than 5 minutes at a time. Oooo... shiny...

Hahahahahahaha-ha... TRUMPET!
Posted Jan 20, 2009
Most of the time I dislike adverts. People out there get paid a huge amount of money, presumably, to come up with an advertising campaign for soap powder and it stinks. The advert that is, not the soap powder. There are sparks of genius sometimes, but by and large ads suck.
Sometimes, they don't. Sometimes the spark of genius or breath-taking simplicity shines through. I loved that cage football thing Nike did a while back with Eric Cantona as the referee; and the recent one with the cake car. I don't like the condescending one about exercising more and eating better with the animated Morph-a-like people; nor do I like the fact Cillet Bang has toned down the volume of Barry Scott's voice.
Favourite right now is the Natural Confectionary companies sweetie advert with the jelly snake and the sugary, sour bear who keeps inexplicably shouting 'Bring on the Trumpets'. I loved that. It makes me grin bordering on wetting myself every time I see it. That's good advertising...

Chilly

Oooo... it's cold in the UK at the moment. Yes, I know it's the middle of December, and therefore I should probably be expecting these sorts of temperatures - but... Anyway, I have extracted some warm gloves and a huge, multi-coloured scarf from the communal 'Wicker Basket of Woollen Things'. They provide some measure of protection, but something always gets cold. My belly normally. Brrrrr...

New Target for Taxation
Posted Oct 9, 2007
I watched the Prime Minister giving his monthly Press Conference yesterday morning. The TV sits in the coffee shop at the front of one of the buildings I work in, so they have the volume down and subtitles on. I appreciate what a tough job it must be to handle subtitles on a live broadcast - I mean, my typing speed, using only two fingers, sucks.
Anyway, the subtitles stuttered across the screen as Gordon Brown spoke and one of the journalists asked a question:
Basically, what were the PMs thoughts on the big win raised by the Conservatives of charging a number of missiles for their special tax status.
Missiles? I chuckled. I mean, even the Conservations aren't daft enough to levy taxes against pieces of military hardware. In the rush of live broadcasting, the journalist had said 'non-domicile' and the subtitler had interpreted, in an instant, a somewhat skewed perception of fact.
Anyway... made me giggle.
