BBC signals an end to era of expansion

Hidden in the article

"The corporations web pages are to be halved , backed by 25 per cent cut in staff numbers."

It also goes on to imply that only web pages that directly connected to programming will survive the cuts. The cuts will take place prior to 2014.

Any one have any knowledge of this or any comment. How safe is H2G2.

Half the website is going, is it?

I guess we'd better select the 50% of conversations and guide entries we want to keep.

I'll vote for this one[BBC ANNOUNCEMENT - THIS CONVERSATION HAS BEEN TERMINATED AND TRASHED - BY ORDER OF RUPERT MURDOCH]

This has been mooted for a while recently, but since the above report is from the Daily Mail it will no doubt only be regarded by the denezins of H2 with distain or as typical scaremongering.

In my opinion H2 has never been 'Safe'. For me at least, it seemed to have found a natural home with the BBC when it was taken over, but just seems to have been left to plough its own furrow largely unnoticed. Until that is, last years so called MOT.

Although it 'passed', except for vague promises involving a revamp to bring it into line with all the other BBC sites, kas far as I'm aware there has never been any 'official' endorsement that H2 has a long term future. Nothing is certain but it would not surprise me to find H2 dropped if push comes to shove and the cost cutting/blood letting that has been facing the Beeb for some little while now comes about.

Reading the Runes, my personal feeling is that it is a waste of time working on any further EG entries until someone comes up with a positive re-assurance of H2's future. The final sentence in the above article says it all really.

It's possible the news has come as a suprise to BBC's Future Media department. I imagine they'll need to know how the land lies before they start making any promises. I just hope this doesn't affect the forthcoming site relaunch.

I don't agree with your advice, though, Deke. I believe that now is the time to start writing entries, to make a bit of noise, and show that the community is active.

Yes, that is a very good point Icy. We should be proactive if there is any real threat - not defensive. smiley - smiley

Bob!

My article, 'The Gull Family and Other Seabirds' is ready for looking at. It has been split into three parts, but not three separate entries, as I have not got the foggiest notion on how to accomplish that. I will let the Editors/Reviewers do that!!

there are 42 ( if I counted correctly ) entries in 'Coming Up'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/ComingUp, as well as some decent Entries in PR.

I seem to remember one about a certain archetypal British Pie! smiley - biggrin
