We will see. I am not all taht big on the idea of a blind date, but I will give it a go. Not like I have been actively dating of late. Someone who is in to computers/gaming would be cool jsut because it is a link of interests.
:fires up DII:
:starts up game as favourite assasian:
:Blind date partner signs in as barbarian tank:
:Awkward silence as we both realize that our game selves are of the opposite gender:
In all actuality, I am intrigued. I want to meet a girl who likes gaming.

I would be interested to know what games she likes.
I hope you have a good time, Marv. Is it tonight?

No, I am not going to set up a date til after I akm moved in two weeks. I have too much on my platter at the moment due to the move and the fact that I must study for a cetification due by the end of the month.

I'm ashamed to say I've never been on a date, still I do have a full football(soccer) team of Xs - and not five a side either.

Hypatia Posted Jun 8, 2004
Maybe we mean different things when we use the word date. How would you define a date, Z?

Here comes the generation gap.
There was an interesting article in the Sunday NY Times magazine recently. It described the mating habits of the typical American teenager and tried to define the terms "hooking up" and "friends with benefits". I cannot tell you how comforting it is to know that my 17 year old is as mystified by this trend as I am. She has a nice regular boyfriend.
Unfortunately, the Times has shifted the article to the archives and it is no longer available without payment.

I'd define a date as meeting up with someone, doing something 'out' together, probably a meal, a drink or going to see a film, just the two of you, and then going home - possibly together.
I wouldn't say it was a date if you just spend an evening together at either of your homes, or if you both go out with a group of friends.

A date is more intimate than just "hanging out".

What he said... I find a date to be far more intimate than just hanging out etc...
As for a friend with benefits, I've done that with disastorous results.

I don't think that friends with benefits is really possible in the long run.

But then they didn't have benefits, they just had alcohol...

I LOVE computer games!
Apart from all the delicious and now terribly nostalgic Intellivision, Atari, Commodore64 ones...
I've played Doom, Quake, Tomb Raider, The Myst series, Dune (Command and Conquer), Baldur's Gate, Avernum, Starship Titanic, etc. etc.
My daughter is a player too. She heads a whole clan of around 200 players on Ashron's Call.
Women gamers do exist.

Do you fancy playing Star Wars Galaxies, mari-rae? It is an online game with a monthly subscription and I have been very impressed with the game support, the graphics are excellent and you can develop your character anyway you like. My dream is to have an h2g2 faction.

It sounds fun, but don't know about online subscriptions... how much is it?

Z Posted Jun 9, 2004
I think in our, slightly less romantic, little world we call friends with benifits f**kbuddies. FB being the reverse of BF.

Mari-rae, I can't remember how much the subscription is off the top of my head! I am still on the free trial period, but it I doubt it is more than a tenner a month as I would feel too guilty!
Next time I log onto the game, I will check and let you know.
I haven't played at all this week so far, as H is on holiday and he avoids games as he suspects he would ignore all the w*rky stuff he should be doing

mari-rae Posted Jun 10, 2004
ok, thanks Caer!
Getting back onto topic...
In theory blind dates should work because the person who sets it up has seen something in both of you that they think will compliment the other. It sounds like you already have things in common, Marv. Have you phoned her in advance and gotten to know her a bit first?
Hope the moving house is going well.

No problem, mari-rae. I've found that having fairly fit female avatar gets me loads of free stuff, but also hit on by 14 year old boys (presumably) .
They have player events within the game and I got invited to a party. As your avatar can also develop as a musician and/or dancer, there were even 'live' bands performing, all whilst the server is coping with the game running on outside the building for hundreds of other players. It just never ceases to amaze the power of the programs and processors running the whole thing with very little lag.
That's a good idea about the phone chats. Thought I had better add something to do with the thread title
