I called myself Penny Whistle thinking myself real original and creative.

Then I met you, Yael, learning that you'd beaten me to it.

Ah, well.

I was fi-hirst! I wa-has fi-hirst! Er yeah, anyway, I actually thought it was cool there was someone with such a similar name... I mean, just think of the possible confusion!

I think I _was_ different, in a way. Because I was very new to this place and didn't really know my way around yet, so I'd usually keep to myself much more.
Anyway, I had a warning in my tag for a while... something around the lines of 'Yael - About to change my nickname once I come up with something better' --> 'Yael - About to change my nickname to Lady Pennywhistle, so don't say I didn't warn you' --> 'Lady Pennywhistle (you can still call me Yael)'.

And GB, when your family says 'Oh God, what are you doing?!' it doesn't necessarily mean they're calling you God...

Add me to the list of stupid people... I don't think I've ever told anyone on here what the B stands for, though.

No, they call me god. When it was my birthday last month they put "Gods Birthday" on the calander to remind them.

You know, I have a feeling that Alex wasn't exactly being really 100% serious about this...

My family know I am Vestboy as I also had it as an email address for a long time.

I read that article with some interest, Lady P. I think in the UK most people get a fairly nondescript name - unless your surname is Beckham.

(For non UK/Spice Girl/Football types Victoria and David Beckham are very famous in the UK. They have three children Brooklyn, Romeo and new baby Cruz.)

I like the thought that parents choose names to suit their baby.

I'm not sure if it's true that Native Americans sometimes named their babies afte the first thing they see after the baby is born. Something like "Moon Shadow On Cloud" would be cool but "Stupid Dog Sitting on Cactus" wouldn't.

Actually, I am neither a Captain or someone with "Nuge" as any part of my name. I thought it just sounded funny. And no-one here knows my real name. Tobias is a name I heard somewhere years ago, and it stuck. Argallius is a name I made up. Its funny too.

"Count Zero" is just an alias for me... I started using it years ago in AOHell chat rooms. I was a fan of the book by William Gibson... I loved the origin of that nick, a computer progamming term "count zero interupt" basically a count down timer from some initial value which causes the program to stop when the count = 0.

Anyways, I used it back then because I identified with the title character, he's not cool, he's a newbie hacker who basically gets in over his head. It fit.

But now in a segment of my RL I'm getting another psuedonym. I'm part of a motorcycle club and I've been tagged with the moniker "Doktor". If I call someone up on the phone from that part of my life and say "Hi, it's me, Rob" they usually have NO IDEA who they're talking to! They think of me as "Doc".


I'd change my nick here to reflect that, but it's just too hard to do that. You changed from Yael to Lady Pennywhistle fairly quickly before TOO many people got used to it and did give plenty of warning to those of us who had... but still some people would miss it. As many varied convos as I'm in I'd never recognise myself if I changed it now.

Well, yeah, I guess you shouldn't, what with being such a h2g2-veteran... but it doesn't really matter I suppose. Because these are - probably - two different 'modes' anyway. I know I'm slightly different here than I am with my RL friends (or my sister, or my parents, or... all different 'modes'), so having a different name isn't that strange really.

I use a different screen name for just about everything; I've duplicated a few but not this one. I may/may not respond to Shagrath. I usually don't respond to my RL name though, becaues it's so common, and people usually aren't talking to me. (My girlfriend responds to my name though...)

I have a friend called Bob. That's not his real name and it is a nickname that has evolved from people not wanting to pronounce his previous nickname which was Barb.

New people introduced to him thought people were calling him Bob with an American accent and didn't want to be so silly, so they just called him Bob.

Why Barb? Well his surname is Dwyer. They also called him Spin. I suppose he could have been called Tumble.

I have a friend called Kate who's nicknamed Bob (or Katebob)...

I'm now thinking of Bob from Blackadder.

That's just the reason...

I know a Sara who's knicknamed Steve.
