Oh, I've been using IE for years now and have been quite happy with it so far.

What I quite like with Chrome, is that you don't need the Google toolbar (which I never had anyway), but just type what you're searching for into the url bar. smiley - magic

I'm just playing with Opera as we speak. Seem's ok so far though again, certain fonts and colours that work in IE, (yes, perhaps buggy code but works) don't show or work in Opera. (or other Open Source stuff)
The point I made a while ago is that even if code is sometimes 'buggy', at least it still works in IE but doesn't in other Open Source' browsers. That's where IE score's well in my opinion. IE is definitely more flexible from that point.

It's interesting how Firefox shows certain fonts (and no, they're not dodgy fonts I'm talking about, just the normal character codes like < : etc. - and funnily enough, it changes how they are displayed, depending on which website you're on).

That was an issue I raised a while back and got 'slapped down' and told it was a nonesense. The fact is all versions of Firefox did that and now I find Opera is doing the same though not on the same scale. As you say Bel, it's not even buggy code, it's standard fonts, colours and picture formats too on occassion get altered.

It's the reason why we have to exchange so many 'normal' codes when subbing for the EG: they display in a very odd way in other browsers (Firefox being among them).

Must be a nightmare for editing. I don't suppose the Beeb's guideML stuff helps either.

The guide ml is no problem at all. And it's mainly when somebody writes the text in Word, then copies and pastes into h2g2 that you have to change all the curly apostrophes.

I've just discovered something interesting: there is a search function in Chrome (string f) which works fine when searching a text. In fact, it marks the first occurrence in orange, and the following in yellow, so you have an idea how many there are. Which is nice.
However, it does not work when you do the testAxxxx thing. It does not find a single word, it tells you there is 0 of 0 results. smiley - weird

I've taken Chrome off this PC now though I might download it onto the XP machine later for a more in depth look at it. I tend to use the XP machine more for testing/running new stuff, that way if anything major goes haywire I can easily re-store stuff. This machine runs Vista as it has the extra RAM and a more uptodate graphics package.
I've only got a 'wired' connection for broadband so have to switch over manually.

*mutters, must get a wireless network connection sorted soon*

I think I'll stick with Chrome for a while at least, to find out whether it is a good browser for the things I need to do (which is mainly editing on here).
I'll go and check whether the search function works when editing.

If you find the button that makes it show words and characters I'm searching for in the body of text, then go ahead. smiley - ok

So, I checked now, and I am sad to say that Chrome is utterly useless for editing texts in h2g2.

Even Firefox is better in that regard, because although it does not put the guide ml tags where you need them, at least you can search for characters and words in the entry.

As I always manually edit, it wouldn't bother me anyway.

There again, there's a lot of difference in editing smiley - thepost to actually editing for the Guide smiley - hug

No, there isn't, really. Have you never searched for all the curly apostrophes in a Post entry? smiley - bigeyes
Or when something needs to be italicised, or linked to an external website, or you want a bulleted list - none of these work in Firefox and Chrome.

bulleted list, italicised, or linked to an external website works in firefox for long time...

Rev Nick { Only the dead are without fear }

I've seen some of this stuff so much on the INFO page. And got a few pretty good chuckles at experienced opinions. How-ever ...

WRT Post #155, the leading sentence says it all ... <>

Web sites are not yet ready to follow the M$ lead. Why should they? would be my query. As I sort of understood it, there are international standards for HTML and web-page creations. If M$ keeps moving the goal-posts, is it really up to the rest of the world to follow in lock-step?

Sorry, I'll slip back into the quiescent mode ...
