Trying a new browser

Post 1

Yes, I installed it today: the brand new Google Chrome. I have yet to find out how to use it properly, though. I went to watch their video where they tell me that it is much faster than other browsers. Not on hootoo, I had to find.
Next thing is: I have to change the font size for each tab I open.
At least I managed to change the language options, so now, I have a spell check for English. It was set to German, which is completely useless for me.

Editing guide entries in this browser isn't an option for me, either: I'm used to the nice features you have in Brunel. However, just as happens in Firefox: if I mark a word, then click on the tags I want to have around this word, it doesn't happen. The tags are positioned behind the tag at the bottom of the entry. Completely useless for a Brunel user. (Yes, I know all you in the other skins don't even know what I'm talking about. smiley - winkeye)

The menu bar is somewhat barren: you have the forth and back arrows, and a refresh icon, a sheet for the settings of the page you're looking at, a tool icon. I only just found out how to make the bookmarks visible.

Anyone else tried the new browser?

Not tried it yet, but then, I'm happy with Opera - except for the Brunel Guide ML thing, which it also does smiley - huh

It is the main gripe I have with Firefox.
Oh, and Firefox takes up a lot of resources and is incredibly slow compared to IE.

*plugs favourite browser some more*

Opera is fast compared to IE, takes up less memory, and has handy features the others don't... But I still use IE for putting links into Guide entries smiley - winkeye

No idea what all this is about. Why can't you just use Notepad for editing?

I've been playing around with this Chrome for several hours now and frankly, it's rubbish. It doesn't recognise a lot of the standard web colours or fonts. It alters and even removes photo's. It doesn't import or accept all bookmarks either from Yahoo or Internet Explorer.
The picture of Dixon of Dock Green in my ps with the words 'You're Nicked' on, disappears and the words are moved to the right side of the page. Most odd. I've tried it in both XP and Vista with same results. Say what you like about IE7 and other IE versions, you can't beat it for reliability imo.
I had same results, more or less with Firefox as well plus the latest Firefox has some serious security flaws still.
Opera isn't bad but again it doesn't recognise some standard web colours and fonts. It certainly seems to work better compared to Firefox and Chrome.

IE isn't reliable, it's just the standard. Other browsers have trouble with things designed for IE because they're designed *badly* to make it work there smiley - winkeye

I can't see the results immediately when editing in notepad. I always do my editing in Brunel, on hootoo.

I haven't tried to look at photos yet, ST. I'll have to check my PS and see how the coding is working. It works fine in the latest Firefox version.

No idea what point you're making here. If IE is so bad then why isn't there a browser from these open source sites that wipe the floor with IE? Why do they insist on emulating IE?
I've used all manner over the years and despite some minor issues with ALL versions IE, haven't found anything that touches it for doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
If IE is so bad why have there been so many court actions against MS to force them to make code available to other developers? Why would they want code that is so alledgedly disfunctional? It's more a case of IE being the one browser that is superior to anything else currently available, everyone else is playing catch up and failing with stuff like Firefox and now Chrome.

OK, the only thing which isn't displayed in full is my Ace smiley. For some reason, it only shows half of it, i.e. the lower half.
It opened my other page remarkably quick, something which takes minutes in IE if it doesn't crash IE in the first place. Again, except for my Ace smiley, all smileys are displayed perfectly fine.

Yes, Firefox is slow in comparison to Internet Explorer. It was on my last PC, and it is on this one.

How odd. In any case I'm quite happy with firefox, and I stopped using IE a long long time ago. I suspect Microsoft was smuggling lousy versions of IE for us Mac users.

My knowledge of browsers is seriously out of date, but one reason why I dropped IE was that they still didn't have tabbed browsing when everybody else had had for a long time, and one reason I stuck to firefox at the beginning was the 'search as you type' facility smiley - magic

Now, chrome, well, I'm also mildly bothered by google's omnipresence.

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

Some... err forget which, earlier version of firefox was quicker than... err whatever old version of IE I were using back... err whenever it was, but now I find whatever this current version of IE is, is pretty much the same speed as the firefox version 3.
I use both IE and firefox, mainly IE as it works more consistant across differnt web pages/technologies, but of late its gotten a bit odd on some web 2.0 content but then I find firefox copes with that fine wherenever IE goes weird on those pages.
Very very ocasionally I'll use a text only web browser, which is faster than anything else... mainly as its not displaying any graphics/pictures smiley - roflsmiley - geek this Chrome thing... tis horrid smiley - yuk and doesn't work at all well as far as I can make out... Mind, I might get futher with it if it'd been designed for humans to use, you know, ergonomics, user centred design, user friendly... Or are they all suddenly dirt words for software devs smiley - run

I think IE still isn't an option for Mac users. Don't know about Chrome, though. You'd think that something this new would be made for Mac users as well.

TRiG (Ireland) A dog, so bade in office

Apparently it was released (or, at least, announced) early by mistake, and is so far only available for Windows users. Since I switched to Ubuntu a while ago, I haven't been able to try it.

I don't think you missed something, TRiG. I haven't yet found what the advantage of it should be, comparted to other browsers I know.

Bel,
google chrome is is still in beta that means its is not "finished" for general public.

in my opinion google chrome is not going the right way. they should not have traditional build of a browser. firstly get away from having visual windows and buttons so that webpages can seen without lots of distracting visual windows and buttons. want the buttons or type in webaddress push right mouse button or use keyboard. opera can use full screen, but I found their menus too extensive.

if want fast then try safari http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
