I daresay I'll sort it, that's why I use the XP machine for 'experimenting', just have to remember now which disc has the drivers for the ethernet card, seems the restore process has forgotten to install the drivers for that so no internet on the spare pc as yet. It's all good fun.
*mutters, now where'd I put that sledge 'ammer?*

just found out why it didn't install the drivers. Both pc's are HP but there's about 4 years difference in age and the recovery discs I used were for the earlier one which didn't have the right ethernet driver anyway. Back to the drawing board.
Time for a break me thinks, I'll have another bash at it later.

I've tried six browsers, kept four of them with one left uninstalled on my HD.
At first Chrome looked good, but the my security told me that it was making outbound tcp connections on every page, the update program kept trying to gain a list of start up items and alter them. It kept trying various techniques such as wilcarding to connect to omniture.112.2o7.net, probably innocent but I got rid of it.
It is incompatible with my security.
The best browser is Safari, very much like Chrome using the same core engine, but looks more sophisticated and doesn't raise a murmer out of my security.

[The best browser is Safari]
So almost everyone seems to say, but it doesn't do it for me (on XP or Vista). For me, Firefox 3.01 does it better and faster.

I don't think I've ever had a virus on my PC, and so far, I only got very few warnings that there might be one. But then I usually don't browse the web a lot, I have my sites where I go. The only danger is that you never know what will be lurking on any link you click on google.

I used to have spybot and adaware on my former PC. My son has something else on this PC, it seems to do the same job.

Just a flying visit, have now sorted the XP machine. I did a full clean re-install in the end, it's just finished downloading and installing all updates, the only thing I've left in terms of new browsers is I've left the Beta version of IE8 but am using the compatability mode to prevent any hassles with existing web pages etc.
All good fun, I'll leave testing of other 'Open Source' software to others, I'm sticking to the I know, that's MS with all it's idiosyncrasies.
