TRiG, trouble is, I promised my parents i'd go and visit them for a few days this year - that was before I had told them. I can just imagine what discussions to expect. It doesn't help to know they mean well. But then maybe it's still better than the usual conversations about who's going to inherit the house etc.

Oh, dear. He's brave and mature enough to not only have realised and admitted to himself and others that more school isn't for him - it isn't for everyone - but also to have worked out what he's going to do next! Sounds like you can be proud of him for that.

Mala, I am proud of my osns - not for what they have achieved in terms of marks at school etc, but for how and who they are. They are wonderful sons, generous, loving, and happy if I can help it.

And that's not enough for their grandparents?
It can't all be about status symbols - and if studying architecture and working on construction sites taught me anything, it's a deep respect for craftsmen. I really wish I'd done an apprenticeship as a carpenter or something before Uni now.
I'm sure he'll find what's right for him.
My cousin left school a month before his Abi, and - well, actually, he's not such a good example, he turned into a politician

It can take a while for us blokes to decide what we want to do when we grow up.
I still haven't decided.

Bob, that has a flaw: I hate shopping.
BEG, nice to see you're back.
RF, I think the problem is that you blokes never grow up.

I do sympathis but would be the worst to offer advice - other than 'don't worry about it'.
My papa taught me to drive and then re-insured the car so that I couldn't drive it. For my eighteenth birthday he gave me a paddle and muttered 'you know where the canoe is'.
I thought it a bit harsh - at the time - but I am grateful now.
Personally, I have absolutely NO intention of ever growing up and being 'sensible'.
