I've had a right faff getting in here this morning. I am actually a member of Get Writing rather than H2G2 and Get Writing was closed for maintenance yesterday afternoon. I have had to go through a slightly different log in procedure this morning and change my log-in name and password. Now it's all done, I'm sure it will work wonderfully but it took ages to get on this morning, and I had to go through a second log-in procedure to reply to your message. I worry that people with lesser computer experience than me, or anyone who didn't see the advanced warnings about the changes to Get Writing will think that it has broken down and give up and go away!
Anyway, enough wittering. I don't think I shall be going out for any meals for a while - I'm too skint! The paint and such didn't cost much, but we have had a buy a new sofa. Yesterday I bought some new lampshades and I still need curtains and today I have to go shopping for a new gas fire. We partially dismantled our very ancient and ugly existing fire in order to decorate and we don't really know how to put it back together. It needed replacing anyway, it looks to be at least 25 years old! I don't want to spend a lot of money because we hope to move house next year, but gas fires are not cheap. We have been using a small electric fan heater in the evenings to keep the chill out of the room. Quite apart from the fact that electric heaters are not cheap to run, it makes so much noise that we can't hear the telly! So, buying a new gas fire and arranging to have it installed is my project for lunch time.

I have purchased a new gas fire but I now have to wait two weeks until they can come and install it.
I have given up on the curtains for the moment - I think I need to see what the sofa looks like before I decide what colour curtains to put with it. So just the 4 to 6 weeks to wait for that to be delivered then!
Cheers

good morning liz....i am soo pleased..i managed to get in on the box !!!i dont know about you,but i hate having to wait for things to be delivered.....and four weekstoo.what colour is your new sofa???i have just got a new brown leather suite, and i have some lovely cream voiles up,i
voiles, the walls are magnolia, and the bottom half ofthe walls are going to be cappucino, when we get round to doing them.i love the beiges and creams that youcan get now.the fire is black, but its a living flame, and it looks so warm when we just have the lamp on(thats cream as well).i like soft colours.....but we didnt change the carpet and pull ons...they are very dark blue..navy i would say,,and the carpet has cream in it...just think how nice it'll be when its finished...its worth it in the end,but everything is so expensive nowcompared to what we paid five years ago!!!well.better got ready for the hairdresser coming...or she'll catch me in my dressing gown!!!chat soon.

Good Morning to you Sal, oh, hang on, it's after twelve so that should be Good Afternoon, shouldn't it?
The decor in my newly painted lounge is two different shades of yellow. I have had a dark blue carpet put down and have chosen a navy blue sofa. I am now worrying that it will look too dark, which is why I am waiting until we have the sofa in situ before I choose a chair to go with it or any curtains. My new fire is a living flame one too. I wanted a recessed one really, but that would involve getting a builder in to make the vent hole big enough and given that we hope to move next year, I am not prepared to spend any more money to get the recess done. Chris managed to reassemble our old fire yesterday and it still works, so at least we don't have to be deafend by the electric one any more. The new fire will be fitted in two weeks time.
Anyway, it's lunch time so I'm off into town.
Bye for now.

Hello there! Nice to hear from you.
Well, my room is still not entirely finished because I am still waiting for the sofa to be delivered. I cannot go and choose curtains and cushions until I see how it looks with the sofa in place. We have got the fire in now. It's loads better than the old one, but I still don't like it much. In fact, I don't like the room much at all - it is just not my taste to have such pale colours but as we want to move next year, I cannot go for my usual loud taste. Once I get the furniture in, I'm sure it will look better.
I am on annual leave this week. Me and my boyfriend went for a day out in London yesterday. We went to the Tower of London, which was not nearly as interesting as I remembered from a previous visit 17 years ago. We also went to Tower Bridge, which was also not as good as we had hoped - we hadn't expected the raised walk ways to be enclosed and the weather was so dull we didn't get much of a view from up there either. Not one of our most sucessful days out, but at least it didn't rain. It is chucking it down here today, which is why I am on the internet.
I'm sorry you're not feeling well. I hope you are on the mend now.
Chat soon.

Hello
I hope you are well. I have been so busy at work since I got back from my annual leave that this is the first time I have been on the Internet for two weeks! I really can't be bothered to go on at home, not when I have sat in front of a PC all day.
Anyway, I thought I would just drop by and say Hi. I had better go and catch up with my other messages and I will try and find time to leave you a more coherent message soon.

Christmas shopping? I haven't even started yet! I went to a Christmas Party on Friday evening but I still don't feel even remotely festive. I suppose I had better start thinking about it soon. We will probably go to my Mum's for Christmas but I'm not sure when yet because Chris still doesn't know whether or not he is working on Christmas Eve.
We have got our new sofa now, but still need curtains, a chair and some sort of mantle shelf so I shall be looking for all these items in the January sales.
Bye for now.

oh dear ...i thik most people are feelingling the same liz.....there doesnt seem to be much of the festive spirit around this year.i think everything is becoming so expensive as well...it just encourages us to put off the shopping until the last minute.i dread it..every year i get in in a state about what to to get people.it's a good idea to buy in the sales..something that ive never done.by by the time i manage to get out,tt,theyre almostost over, but i know someone who buys next years prepressies in the sale....if only i could be so organised.ikea se seem to do some nice chairs..thats where i got my new suite from, and it's really comfortable.
anyhow..i hope you and chris have a lovely christististmas..and a healthy ,y ,happy new year.chathat to you soon....take care.and enjoy all the parties!!!salxxx

I think we have already been to our only party actually. I am going out for a meal with my work colleagues a week on Friday, then that is it really. I still don't know what (if anything) we are doing at New Year because Chris is incapable of making a decision about it. I don't think there is much chance of him ever making an honest woman of me if he can't even commit himself to a night out!
Chris's works Christmas do was in February last year, which was really good because it gave us something to look forward to. January and February always seem such dire, dark months, so it was really nice to have a night out to liven up that dull time of the year. So I'm hopeful of another party early in 2004.
I still haven't done any Christmas shopping. I really must get off my fat back side this weekend and hit those shops.

i thinkinkink this is where i came in liz!!from what youve said i'd better not even me mention the gift that might be a BIG surprrprise..like i did on your birthday!!!!!my hubby usually just goes with the flow....i suppose with all the women in the family he thinks better of argueing.we spend half an ho hour most days deciding(well.not even decidinding)..discussing what he he wants for tea....then it usualy ends with...well.whatever YOU want!!!
as for the shopping....i thought i had everything,,,then looked at wht i'd ought,,,and went in to a pani about making everyone equaequal.etc.tc..and needing to buy more for for so and so,and not giving thatthat to soand so.......and i still havent got what i i need.oh well....my big fat rear is staytaying right where it is afer this weeweekend!!!!sal

Aha, so total indecision is a general male trait then?
Continuing to rant on a similar theme, last night Chris came home from snooker and decided that it would be a good time to discuss New Years Eve. I pointed out, rather crossly, that I had tried to sort out some plans several weeks ago, but he didn't want to talk about it then. Now he expects me to find a non smoking table for four in a nice restaurant for New Years Eve - oh yes, no problem with less than three weeks to go.
So, I had better stop complaining and get on the 'phone to see if I can get us in anywhere. MEN!

whoops...i think he'd better keep his head down this christmas liz.it's typical though...i just hope you find somewhere at short notice that's decent.alternatively you could always entertain at home, and let him dom do the cooking,i' m sure he wouldnt be so indecisive next time!!!!!!!!!!
i cant honesnestly say it's just a man thing...i am such a ditherer most of the time.....i drive the fhe family mad .whatever you decide to do.i hope you enjoy it anyway!!!!>xxx

My first choice restaurant isn't even open on New Years Eve so I have booked us a table at an Italian Restaurant that we have been to several times. There are nicer places, but, without wishing to sound snobby, Chris's friends are not in well paid jobs so I didn't like to book anywhere too expensive - I think they might balk at the prices at Il Punto or Mortimers, and I don't think they would eat sea food anyway.
I shall be doing my own kind of dithering at the weekend, trying to decide what to buy people for Christmas.
Chat next week.

The cold that has been threatening for the past week finally got me at the weekend, so the shopping didn't really happen. I did go into town on Sunday afternoon but I only lasted an hour. When I was in BHS I felt has though the floor was moving and that is when I decided that I wasn't well enough to be out shopping. So, I've only got one more present than I had last week.
Do you think that if I ignore Christmas, it will go away?
