Is anyone on this thread going to the London meet?

You can see how old and wrinkly I am!

*sighs* I won't get some days off and I have not enough money at the moment... No, won't be at the London meet... smiley - sadface

btw, Black Flag... has the word "black" in it... reminds me of another brilliant band: Big Black! I still start to shiver listening to "Kerosene"...

I'll be there if all goes to plan, Superdog. You can see how I completely fail to resemble a skinhead.

And Chan-Mick, that's a poor excuse! Researchers come to the offical meets from all over the world!

For some reason I feel I ought to mention Bad Brains - for posterity.

I absolutely LOVE Big Black! "The Grinder", "Racer X", "The Power of Independent Trucking"... I could go on all afternoon.

Black Flag, Minor Threat, and Bad Brains are among my favorites as well, and I'll also mention Naked Raygun, 7 Seconds, GBH, T.S.O.L., and the Misfits...

...and- *look of awe and reverence* - Iggy Pop

Sadly, there's no way I'd be able to make the London meet either. I'm planning to go to Australia mid-February or beginning of March, and can't afford both. smiley - sadface

And, at the risk of sounding redundant, I'd also like to mention my favorite band of all, the Damned. They're smiley - bleeping brilliant!

I put my name down but won't be able to come, as I'm having surgery around that time... nothing major, sort of a nose job with medical implications, but I will get a new nose out of the deal, so I'm rather excited (although it's going to hurt a lot... I know.)

Oh well. I always end up going to London at least once a year, so I'll make it some other time.

Does anyone else think that electronica is the new punk? *prepares to be pelted with rotten eggs for suggesting it*

If it's the sort that is created and distributed from peoples' bedrooms, then maybe.

My point, partly. What I also meant is that it has the same disruptive force and the same nihilistic attitude as early punk. I think it's taken over from punk as the new music to annoy your parents with smiley - smiley

(((((psychocandy)))))))

for the Damned so far, "Love Song"... for Iggy - everything he ever did!

Skugga- "Love Song" is an awesome tune! Not to mention "Nasty", "There Ain't No Sanity Clause", "In Dulce Decorum", and of course the Plastic Bertrand/ Elton Motello cover, "Jet Boy, Jet Girl". I'd better stop before this post turns into an endless recital of all their good stuff.

I also love everything Iggy Pop has ever done. As far as I'm concerned, in the pantheon of punk, Iggy is *the* Almighty One. smiley - biggrin

I went to a festival in the mid 90s where, amongst other bands, both Iggy and the Bad Brains were playing. Iggy was just fabulous and his musicians (haven't got a clue who they were!) were nothing but sonic serious killers. Fan-tas-tic! The Bad Brains, on the other hand, were OK because the material is good but played their stuff like schoolboys recite their lessons, all nice and spotless but a real bore, I'm afraid... But then again, we all know that musicians are human and can't be at the top every single day. Too bad though.

The Damned? YES! (Yes? Aw, Damned!)
The 1rst album is a monument.

Electronica being the new punk? You guys made a few points with which I would be tempted to agree but I find there is (apart from the music itself) still an element that makes a huge difference: Don't you think that the electronic lot seriously lacks the agressivity that punk conveys by nature: provo, teenage riot, anarchy, anger, foul language. I'm not convinced that a muscic style associated with happy faces, love signs and laughing pills has got so much to do with the spirit of punk. Too many smiley - smileys around! I'm aware that some specific trends within the electronic circle are a bit more offensive than the rest but I fear it's far from being enough to stand the comparison. I don't think it's necessary to try and find a new punk in each musical style that arised afterwards (I heard the same argument with rap years ago) but punk rock lives through the impact it's had on various bands who don't claim the label and as far as I'm concerned, that's perfect.

MrT, I meant that London is a long way for my finances and, unfortunately, that's a very solid excuse! No doubt I'll come to London sooner or later though. I used to live there and will visit friends when I can.

Funny no one mentioned Stiff Little Fingers yet...

I think rap perhaps most in common with punk.

Stiff Little Fingers? The first band whose songs I really really loved... "Nobody's Heroes", "Alternative Ulster", ... I still have their first 2 records...

But: about 4 years ago they toured Germany and they turned out to be a real pain in the neck for the people who organised their gigs in very small clubs over here... They wanted to stay in not very cheap hotels, shouted at the people running around for them, sent their roadies to the club to do the soundcheck for them... I was a bit involved in organising the gig in Frankfurt, and it was horrible. A band from here I know very well personally was to play before them - they didn't allow the PA-people to change SLF's settings for the PA, they kicked around the other drum set, and I was just disgusted.

I ended up very upset standing on a table, waving my fist at SLF shouting "Go f**k yourself!" - so far for the best band of my youth... smiley - sadface

Oh, forgot something about Bad Brains: I got up in the morning with "Sailin' On" in the 80s - turn volume up to 10 and you'll be able for just anything in about a second! smiley - winkeye
