"Beams all round as LHC progress accelerates.

The world's largest particle accelerator has performed its first collisions, and its first beam acceleration.
Progress on the giant experiment has been rapid in the four days since the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was restarted, Cern director of communications James Gillies told ZDNet UK on Tuesday.
'These collisions are the first in the LHC at all,' said Gillies. 'We've been going into new territory. It's been going quite remarkably fast.' "

Black Hole/End of the Galaxy/End of the Universe here we come!!!
No more Universe = no more w*rk!!!!!
Strange that this is not considered a vital story any more. The thing's BEGINNING TO WORK, in spite of theories like the 2 respectable scientists who claimed that nature itself may be stopping it working - from the future (actually not all that crackpot as theoretically time can go in any direction).

Maybe it's not news because the science behind it hurts people's heads? And it is vaguely alarming.

Ellen - don't let my rather odd sense of humour worry you. After all, they've started having collisions now, and nothing has happened. Have a careful look at this:

I think it's more a case of no danger, no story, actually.
Sorry if I alarmed you.
Jabs
btw I've lost your e/m address, along with your e/m, somewhere inside me system. Could you write to me so I can know it again? Ta very much.

Nice to see you again, Jabs.
I leave nuclear physics to the experts. But just in case the Sun emits record numbers of neutrinos, and the Earth's core heats up and the planet's crust starts to disintegrate in 2012, I'm heading for that huge ark in the Himalayas.

Jabs it's had a long time off for repairs, I wonder what the scientists will discover by running the collider.

TT, in part they don't know - the adventuring part of science. But also they do hope to find the Higgs boson - so called because Higgs thought it up theoretically to answer a simple basic question - or two really -
what makes matter and what sort of 'glue' holds it together? The H. boson (a minute particle) is a candidate for this, inside other particles. Thought up by Higgs.
The problem of matter - if particles are whizzing around at fantastic speeds - their speed is measured in attoseconds - One attosecond is to a second what one second would be compared to the whole lifetime of the universe! - then exactly how do we get the resistance/inertia of objects, which seem to be so solid?
BTW, I forgot to point out that you need to get 2 more paragraphs from the link I gave you to if you have collywobbles left. Viz:
“The LHC Safety Assessment Group (LSAG) has issued a report (summary HERE” (click 'here' which is in blue)

Jabs, maybe someday you can discover a previously unknown particle, and it can be called a Jabberwock.

If the scientific community found out about your head, you would end up in a museum. You'd be world-famous.

Jabs it will be fascinating if they did find the The H. boson and I will look at your links to give me more insight.

I bet those H boson thingies aren't half as easy to dodge as es!
It all sounds very science-y and complicated, but I'm pretty sure it'll help prove that the answer is 42
*on a less silly note* Thanks for sharing that, Jabs.

I think it must be marvellous fun to try to discover something never before known, Paul, pushing back the frontiers of knowledge and all that (with a lot of very bright people)
Beats w*rk, anyway
But the main reason I'm popping up here is to remind everyone:
.....................................................................
although it might be good to carry a towel, and have some swift just in case. Although wearing a dressing gown and slippers might be taking things a bit too far. especially for the ladies.
