AlexK vs. Daveborn

Boy oh boy did we have some action. Once again Dave somehow convinced me to come to Caribou and play cards with him. The day started fine and we where having a good game. Until Krasny got beat. I flopped a set of nines and Dave went all in with an open-ended strait flush draw. No bad play or anything, I mean when you have 3458 outs what can you do but go all-in? It’s still a beat though. Then Dave beat me again, this time with a bad play that I don’t recall. Then he beat me again! I was pissed. Too pissed. I challenged Dave to a $30 tounry and he pussed out. So I said fine lets play 1-2. He said okay lets play!

(Why would I want to play Dave in 1-2 you ask? Allow me to explain. Limit poker is a much more technical and automatic game. Luck is much less of a factor in limit then it no limit. For example if Dave calls a preflop raise with [24s] and flops four to the flush, he can bet all-in, get lucky, and break me. However in limit even if he gets lucky he can only take 4 bets from me. Not to mention that usually it wont come and he will simply lose. Playing bad cards in limit is a suicidal thing to do. In no limit getting lucky once is enough to win. In limit getting lucky once is fleeting victory.)

Dave bought in $20 and I bought in $10. I took Dave’s $20 in about 15 min. Then Pitts came in. He was talking about how much he hates cards but wants to play. We told him to sit down and get some money going. He said no. He said he will watch an commentate. Dave re-loaded $20. After Pitts saw the first hand he said “Ok deal me in.” He bought in for $20 and we had a 3-handed 1-2 game going. I won another $20 and cashed out, then Pitts and Dave dueled for a little while. Pitts broke even. A good night for Alex K.

So I came, Pitts was there and Dave was late. We played an initial game. It was fast and painless. I bad beated Pitts once. He went all in with [KK], I made him for an Ace and called with [55]. I hit a 5 and took it down. Sorry Pitts. Pitts re-bought and we put Dave out. Then we split 5-5.

This tourney I got a little stirred up. Dave made a bluff bet preflop of $300. I had [77] so I played back all-in for $350 more. Dave has [K3], at this point Dave should be thinking to himself, “Hmm, well I bluffed with the intent to steal the blinds. Krasny went all-in on me so he obviously has a better hand then me. I mean even if Krasny is bluffing he has at least [A2]. But I already raised it’s impossible for me to fold now isn’t it?” And so he called. Before the flop even came I was already totally pissed and I could not believe he is stupid enough to call with such a bad hand. Well I guess it was a good call because the first card off the top was a king and he took it down. Good call DB, I will, as always, be very happy when your death finally comes. During this tourney Pitts decides to leave and Kosky plays for him. Kosky cannot take all the beats Dave delivers and loses.

This is the tourney where all the action happened. Paul decided to play. We begin. The very first hand Pitts makes a large raise with something like [83] and Paul does what he does best (call). Then the flop gave Pitts a gut shot and he bet 200, Paul calls. On the turn Pitts bets AGAIN 200. On the river I think Pitts got a pair of threes or something because I think he called Paul’s river bet. Paul had a pair of fives or something and almost took Pitts out. Pitts did something similar on the hand right after and paid Paul off the rest of the way. He then re-bought and swore to play well. Paul finally got busted and re-bought. Then he got busted and re-bought. I was short stacked with Kosker and Paul having outrageous chips. I took a break to go pee. As I came back Kosker was out of his seat very upset. He shouts, “K2 beat KT!” “Preflop!?” I ask amazed. Kosky tells me that he went all in for $800 preflop and Paul called with K2. Kosker would have had a big smile on his face after he saw Paul call with a dominated hand. He wasn’t so happy when he saw the flop though: [22Q]. So it was Me and Paul heads up. The pot is $35 and I have about $900 in chips. Paul is sitting comfortable with about $6,100. I offer him a terrible deal to see if he will go for it. I say we split it 20-15. He says no. I win a few pots, then I win an all-in and double up. I take the lead and I offer him the same deal except I get the big portion this time. He says no. Then the hand that busted him: Paul [66] Alex [89]. We both limp in and the flop comes [827] I tap him and he calls. That’s all she wrote!

***

Ok I just got back from Koskers. Wow talk about action! I don’t feel like writing all of it down so I will just give it to you the way it is in my notes.

smiley - disco Kranz says “That’s retarded” when he gets a pocket pair goes all-in and gets called by a bigger pocket pair. Twice.
smiley - disco Wolfgang is a real prick, he slow rolls 2 people (He has the best hand, and everyone is all-in and there is no more betting and he acts real slow. He had [KK] with a flop of [J63] no flush possible.

smiley - disco Wolf and Kosker chop tourney one

smiley - disco Krasny’s [AK] never wins.

smiley - disco Krasny’s [AK] WINS!

smiley - disco Dash raised my $200 blind to $400. I have [T6s] and I called and flopped trips. Pitts cries bad play… (Just you guys wait.)

smiley - disco BIG HAND: Handsom [AA], Pitts [55], Kosker [AQ] everyone is all-in. Kosker rivers the strait!

smiley - disco Krasny’s [AK] never wins!

smiley - disco River master Wolf rivers everything.

Ok at this point Daveborn made me angry, here is how. I had [67s] and he has [JTs]. I think we both limped in. The flop came [867] no flushes. I bet $300 and Dave calls. The turn is an [A] I am scared, and Dave bets $400. I am only scared not stupid. I make a great call. River is a [T] and Dave bets all-in for $100. I call since it’s like a $1,600 pot. I get pissed. I told Dave that I want him to die in a horrible way. I want him to be driving his car on a rainy day, lose control and fly into a ditch. I want the car to turn upside down somehow pinning him inside. Then I want his car to slowly sink into the mud while he is still alive and unable to get out. I want him to drown in mud. I am more then upset at Dave at this point. Within ten minuets Dave limps in with [57] and then Kosker raises $300. Dave calls and flops trips. I am evern more pissed. A little later Dave rivered a gutshot. This is why Dave’s plays points are so low even though he still wins tournies somehow. Pitts and Dave get heads up and Pitts plays wonderfully. Pitts plays great cards, going all in at great times. Then Pitts went all in with [A9] and got called by [QK] and Dave hit. Pitts got bad beated out.

By this time I am down to only +5 for the day (I came to Koskers house +30!) I am pissed. This tourney that happens though… It defied all logic. Everyone decided to play poorly. The line of the tourney was “I can re-buy right? Ok all-in.” I am not joking, anything and everything was an all in. Well actually I am exaggerating. Only Kosky and Pitts did that. Although Dave kinda always does that anyway. Me, Handsome, and Wolf tried our hardest to play good cards. Dave took the early lead because Pitts called a few gutshots that didn’t come. Kosker went all in with [Q6] and Pitts called it with [23]. Oh yeah I know what you are thinking, and it happened. Pitts flopped a pair of threes and took it down. Kosker was in $20, Handsome was in $20 and Pitts and Dave had both re-bought a little bit. Well everyone finally got out except Me, Kosker and Dave. Kosky offered a split $20-25-25. Dave said no play it out. So the very next hand Dave went all in and lost to Koskers [AJ]. Me and Kosker chopped. WOW! ACTION PACKED.

I Get My Ass Kicked

This poker day starts off on a good note. Me and Pitts worked at our landscaping job and one of the guys that worked there told us a story about a true badass. There is this guy who does tree work. He cuts branches off and stuff. In his off time he is a martial arts master so he is already badass. He was cutting a branch off a tree with a chainsaw. It was a high branch so he was on a harness. One side of the harness broke and the sudden change in his equilibrium made his saw slip, it fell out of his hands and landed in his stomach. It then slide down and fell off. It cut him terribly from just below the nipple all the way down to his hip in a long diagonal slash. He then fell from the tree through all the branches (which slowed him down) and fell on his back. He quickly came to and saw the giant slash in his stomach. He grabbed it with his hand and held his stomach shut. He got in his car and drove to the hospital. He walked to the ER, saw a doctor walking by and says to him “I need some help.” They stitched him up. That’s badass! After work me and Pitts bought new shoes. So it’s a great so far.

Lets let the card begin! The first tourney was a simple one. Reebock went out on a little bit of a beat. He had [AJ] and Yury my Russian friend had [66] the flop came [Q47] or something very blank. The turn gave Reebock some hope [J] but it wasn’t to be since the river gave Yury trips. Then Dave took Yury down.

This tourney is where the action is. Pete and Paul decide to play. Pete doesn’t have any idea how to play. Paul I have played with before, he is a terrible calling station. That’s right more terrible then Mitch. Paul sees a gutshot as a golden draw and he has no idea why he shouldn’t call $300 when the pot is only $30. You know what the thing is though? If you play like that and hit EVERYTHING then you win lots and lots of chips. Here is a hand I thought was interesting.

Alex [KJ]
Paul [T8]
Pete [AK]

I don’t remember the exact action but there was some betting preflop. I think I bet and they both called. The flop came down [J83] and I bet $300. Pete called me, and then Paul raised me $300 and Pete called out of turn. How could I possibly have the best hand? There is no way! With someone doubling my bet and someone else calling everything as fast as possible? I was looking at [AJ] at least right!? So I made what I thought was a good fold. Well nothing else came and Paul won with his pair of 8s. How stupid. A few hands later I lost and rebought. The first hand I got after I rebought was [AKs]. Dave double the blind for $400, Paul Calls, Yury calls. I look at the pot and say “It’s big enough, All-in.” Dave calls me so fast I am sure he has rockets. Paul calls me just as fast. Yury mucks his [77], good fold. Dave has [AJ] and Paul has [77] yeah all the sevens where out. [3J6] I lose. First hand of the rebuy. I don’t rebuy anymore. Here is how the game went from Pauls perspective [AK][QQ][AK][AQ][99][AK][AK] and he won every single one of those. Paul wins this tourney. Oh yeah Yury went all in for $1000 into Paul’s $200 blind. Paul called with [83off]!!! He won too and he said this “All I know is that you are going all-in and I got cash to spare.” Wow words of wisdom if I ever heard them. Him and Mitch should get together “I got the muscle” Mitch would say as he calls [63].

This last tourney was a real hot won. But this time I am down $20. I don’t really remember much and I don’t have much written down but I know I lost with [AK] 3 times. I rebought 5 times for a total of $30 in a single tourney. Luckily I somehow made it to the final 2 with Pitts and we split the pot $35 to me and $30 to him. I am glad I won that last one… That would have set me back. But I feel better now.

Canterbury No Limit Tournament

Hey, we have a quest contributor. Pitts went to the sunday no limit at the Burry. I wish I could go, but I had other plans. I will be there next time. Here is Pitts to talk about his experience.

Hey, it's Pittsey again. Here to talk about my experience at the no limit tournament held at Canterbury Card Club this last Sunday. The buy in was 50+10 with one optional rebuy. A total of 208 people entered this large tourney. The players start of with 2000 in chips and the blinds start off at 25-50. I played very tight and went with blackjack attack, only face cards. My third hand in I got Cowboys, raised it 200 preflop, I made about 600 off a drunk guy with them. I made a few bad decisions and went down to about 2,200 when I got Rockets. Under the gun raised, I followed by re-rasing him about 200, then another guy re-raised me to 1200, the original raiser folded, I went all in. I was called by 88, and doubled up. Then a 10 min break followed, I was moved to a new table where I sat down by the ultimate calling machine. My first hand was A J under the gun, I raised the now 200-400 blinds to 800, I was called by 2 people, one being the bb( the calling machine). The flop was ragged, but I figured with both people checking I could bet, 1000 was my bet. One person folded and the calling machine called. The turn was a blank, for both of us, I went all in with Ace high. He called!!! I began to cry inside and think of the horrible decision I just made, but wait!! He flipped over an open ended straight draw, 9 high! The river was a blank and once again I doubled up with Ace high. At this point the blinds are now 300-600, and I am half way through the tournament with 6,000 in chips. I began to make a few bad calls, and then it happened, small blind. I was sitting on A K, very nice. Under the gun and the next 4 players all limped in! The madness stopped when someone finally raised. I decided the pot was so huge, and with A K, I figured all in was the right move, going heads up was my goal, but I got called by 2 people!!! The flop was horrible, and both players checked the flop, turn, and river. The calling machine mucked his cards after the original raiser flipped over A 7, with the river being a 7!!!! I felt my heart sink and wanted to rip the chubby checks off the 14 year old looking kid. On the way home I came up with a few keys to large no limit tournaments, and this is the points:

1. Double up as many times as you can! If you feel you can double up and win then do not sit there and be afraid.
2. There are a lot of bad players, choose your hand carefully and take advantage of them. I folded A 10 about 4 times, because a lot of players I noticed would limp in with A J or even A Q at times.
3. Never gamble! Play very coordinated hands, that way when the flop comes if you hit, you not only hit a pair or better but you have outs to something much better. These are just a few of the ideas I thought were absolutely crucial. All in all, make sure when you do go all in, you can fold everyone out, or have only one caller. I think we all know going all in preflop and receiving two callers is a death wish. Just keep track of your chip count and the chips other people have.
