Welcome to h2g2. Have a loo brush. I'm Batty, one of the h2g2 ACEs (Assistant Community Editors). I actually just moved away from NYC
and am currently getting various 'puter certifications. You'll want to look at the link for the NE US Researchers Group. They're a great deal of fun.
Below are a few links you might find useful. Feel free to contact me if you need further assistance or just wish to chat. Click on my name above to go to my page and leave me a message, or just reply to this one.

Konichiwa! Actually, when I said I was a native New Yorker, I was referring to the state, not the city. I'm really a lifelong Long... excuse me, Lawn Guylander. But I thought I ought to be less specific for the benefit of those across the pond who may not know where LI is.
Don't know how often I'll be visiting h2g2. Even with broadband, this is one of the s-l-o-w-e-s-t websites I've ever seen. But the bits I've seen so far look like fun, and I look forward to contributing what I can.
Meanwhile, you're welcome to check out my own website... http://bobbuethe.tripod.com/cartoonacy/

I believe Shea the Sarcastic (and now TJ also since they're now married) live on LI. Tacsatduck is in Westchester (I think). There are quite a few NYers on the site. When I lived in Manhattan we had a couple meets there. One right after 9/11 and another follow-up meet in February. They're a fun group.
The server does have days when it's frightfully slow. What kind of inet connx are you using? Once you've been on the site for a while and the images are cached and all it loads quite a bit faster of course.

Well, I HAD been using the T1 line at work... gotta stop doing that, though. The word on the grapevine is that the Powers That Be are beginning to monitor employee Internet usage, and will be making examples of abusers in the near future.
Right now, I'm at home and using a cable modem. Not much better. In fact, it seems to run even slower when I try to skim through conversation threads. It's like flipping through a book printed on flypaper.
My schedule doesn't allow me much time for face-to-face socializing these days, and my wife usually makes plans for what time there is. (She's the Long Island Coordinator for Greater New York Mensa, which means we have to go to four or five events a month.) But I'll poke my virtual head in here now and then to see what's up, and chime in when I have something pointless to say.

Cable can be like that. It all depends on how many people in your immediate surroundings are using it. I have cable but live in a neighborhood where there aren't many cable inet subscribers ( or so it appears). If you need anything don't hesitate to ask.
