H2G2 is going up the toilet.

Yup, just saw that
Forests occasionally need to be burnt down to be regenerated. I think I'm going to go work on an entry for the first time in a few weeks.

I very much hope so.
I fear, however that certain dogs will not let go of the bone.
But as far as I am concerned this has been my one and only rant about it on h2g2 and it will remain the only one. As you say we need to move on, keeping the spirit of h2g2 - and it still exists - alive.
And on that note...
I shall away quickly before you mention the UG again

Somehow, you make that sound hugely inspiring. And I mean that in all seriousness.
And now I'm really not going to post again until after I've finished my math homework!

>Rich, I think what we really need is a sort of 'face of the Post': someone who will keep everything organised and talk to all the contributors and commenters/criticisers and make sure to respond to everyone's queries and order the rest of the staff around. In other words, I suppose, someone to fill Shazz's shoes.
Clearly I can't be another Shazz, but if you guys and especially Reef are feeling the pressure, I'd be happy to step in. I could certainly help to co-ordinate things and pull all the strands together - if the 'simple days' were when you just had to get material together and forget about the editorial processing I could certainly do a job in that respect.
Time isn't an issue for me - if this site needs more love in any way or place I'm there. Recharging the Post would certainly be something I could give a lot of mine to.

That's amazingly sweet, Rich.
I hope you don't mind if I say let's just keep an eye on what Reefy wants to do. I think she may just be waiting for someone to offer to take over, but I really can't speak for her.
I'm going to email her tomorrow (or maybe in a little while, once things have blown over a bit) and ask her what she wants to do, passing on your offer of help.

Garsh, I hoped this journal would help some people find their way, but didn't think it could directly help like that
I really am something, aren't I?

The offer stands for as long as you want, EMR.
>I hope you don't mind if I say let's just keep an eye on what Reefy wants to do. I think she may just be waiting for someone to offer to take over, but I really can't speak for her.
Absolutely. I have no intention of stepping on Reef's toes, or anyone else's - this isn't something I've contributed to or had anything to do with - you guys do all the work, and I'm not suggesting I can just waltz in above anyone's heads. It sounds like she feels under pressure, particularly in terms of being criticised for little mistakes each issue, and if I can do something that takes that weight off her, it's worth my time.
If you want or need me to, I'll do all I can to keep this thing going. Even if it's only so you have someone to point the finger at if things go wrong It's a wonderful part of hootoo that obviously takes an incredible amount of time to put together, and in my opinion deserves more recognition than it gets.
My email is skankyrichatexcitedotcom if you need to discuss this offsite.

Oh, there's Mr Vice President Big-boots taking all the credit
Actually, Jodan, you may have provided a spark here in many respects. I feel a helluva lot more positive about things than I did a few hours ago and - I hate to inflate your ego - this journal has had a lot to do with it.
So I feel I must thank you, mate

Thanks so much Rich. And I echo your words in regard to this journal entry.
I did actually finish my homework, though I'm not entirely sure I understood. Frankly, I don't really care. At the beginning of each lesson our textbook tells us how we might use the information in real life. This lesson on solving systems of equations with matrices apparently relates to population ecology. Now, not only do I not intend to become a population ecologist, I have no idea what the hell a population ecologist does. So why should I be forced to care by having a grade hung over my head?

J Posted Nov 3, 2005
You'll need matrices down the line, though. Of course, for those of you who haven't seen it, the movie 'The Matrix' is all about population ecology.

Oh no, don't inflate Jodan's ego any more - he finds it difficult to get through the h2g2 door already

Am I the only one who has got an "end of the h2g2 world" sign yet?
It is interesting, because we need people to complain for people to find out that theres something wrong, but we need the positive people to keep the motivation going.
I like to think I'm somewhere in between... but I fear that I may be edging towards the complaint department slightly.
Anyway, looks like we need a new Editor in Chief for the Post... the team is there : Myself, Echo, Titania, Cal, and hopefully still Awix and Reefgirl (who is currently not happy)...
I have become the "man behind the scenes" now so I can't do it (and wouldn't have the time to do all of the post)...

A few days ago, myself and others were discussing a plan of action on WJH, but even though I've read the "You should be ashamed of yourselves" thread on the Ace's page, I'm also feeling more positive. I think you guys are right when you say that PR, the UG, the Post etc are the heart of the guide, and as long as we keep them going, (and preferably even improve them), h2g2 will live on!
And on that note, I've been flooding PR with entries recently - well, mostly because I want my 2 edited entries badge, but anything to help hootoo...
Also, I don't know if you people know, because I'm not sure which of you it was that replied to my email (it was an RL name) but I'm going to be writing a few things for you. Hope it relieves the pressure a little. And for Skankyrich!

Kat - From H2G2 Posted Nov 3, 2005
Reefgirl has OFTEN been not happy about H2G2 and the things that go on around here. I like her and I enjoy talking to her and participating in things which she is a part of...but at the end of the day it becomes a big thing of "well if you don't like it then leave or move your focus to a different part of H2 that you feel enthusiastic about".
Same as Skanky, I manage to get through a LOT of H2G2 without encountering any of the arguments and crap that happen. However, same as Mort, I've seen all of the big things and all the times when H2 has been shaky and people have got up in arms and it KEEPS GOING. Just because there are some parts that don't work great don't mean that there aren't other parts that DO.
I'm really glad to see this Jodan because I was starting to feel completely awful seeing all the journals and threads where people are complaining about the italics, PR, the volunteers and the general community. I STILL like H2 even if it is different from when I was first around (I used to have one of those magically low U-numbers).
off to find things to do
Kat

"PR, the UG, the Post etc are the heart of the guide, and as long as we keep them going, (and preferably even improve them), h2g2 will live on!"
A rising tide lifts all boats Even if it's in a toilet bowl, or maybe a flood of entries in PR and the AWW.
Does the sheep look smug? I always thought he was quite cute.
I honestly don't remember h2g2 being that different from what it is now. But I joined in early 2003... Later than most of you folks. Still, though. There's something magical about finding something in PR and the AWW you never would have expected, and receiving a comment on your entries.
