sod's law
Getting out of the bath to answer the phone, and it stopping ringing as soon as you go to pick it up, is an unpreventable event as stated in section 1.2, clause 9 of the law according to sod (see clause 10 for doorbell). whether to risk going back into the bathroom and having to rush back should it ring again or stand and wait for the person in question to try and communicate with you once more is a serious consideration. I have toyed with the idea of buying an answerphone, but have decided that if I have one then I'll only have to reply to its messages. Its easier to avoid people if you don't know they've been trying to get hold of you. On the other hand, an answerphone means that you can pick and choose whom you speak to. The mental torment that weighing up the pros and cons of this subject gives me is exactly the reason why I refused to own a mobile phone for a whole nine months last year. Call me anti-social if you want but I don't like the idea that I am contactable 24/7. If the phone rings, I let it ring four times, an acceptable number so that the caller doesn't think I've been standing by the phone all afternoon.
