London - Who hit who??

Well I hit London at the weekend ..... or maybe it hit me .... I'm not sure, but I think I came off worse.smiley - cdouble

That place just sucks the life clean out of you ..... I don't know where to begin.smiley - bigeyes

We arrived on Friday and we took the kids to the park where we hired cart/bike thingies - *phew* the weather was lovely and the afternoon just flew by. Went back to my neices flat where we had a barbeque on the balcony and a few beers ... mmmmm ... and took in the view of London City .... St Paul's, the Eye, the Gherkin.smiley - cool

On Saturday we were up early and off to pound the streets ..... Waterloo Bridge, the West End and of course Lord of the Rings at the beautiful Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. This is a show that has had mixed reviews, but it got the thumbs up from us. The special effects were really special, the revolving - all singing all dancing - stage was awesome and the intermittent music was refreshing and haunting in equal parts. It was a spectacular show which actually took our breath away in places. The acting was overshadowed in places by the costumes/stiltwalkers/performing stage, but we left the show certain that we'd got what we paid for.smiley - cool

I must find out what Lord of the Rings is about some day.smiley - rolleyes

After that epic show we were starving, so trotted off to the Rainforest Cafe where we all enjoyed a very satisfying meal.smiley - drool Several purchases from the shop later and we were off to Hamley's ...... where it was impossible not to spend more money.smiley - 2cents

Absolutely exhausted we made for the next smiley - bus home to East Dulwich and our rather curious sleeping arrangements .... which were subject to change through the night due to various snorers.smiley - laugh

smiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzz

Sunday morning was another early start - with 4 of us needing the shower every morning it was impossible to go out anywhere *that* early, but we headed off to the local Harvester for an early Sunday lunch ..... which was delicious and very reasonable.smiley - drool

Then off we went again on the smiley - bus .... to the Tower of London .... where we had a really, really good guide. Oh how the kids loved the gruesome tales of days gone by - and I do believe they actually learned some stuff.smiley - bigeyes At kicking out time there we strolled down to The Monument ..... then made our only trip to McD's, more to kill time than anything else - and it was the only place opened, while we were waiting for the Haunted London tour to to begin.smiley - footprints Around the financial district - where we stumbled upon the filming of some scenes of National Treasure 2. smiley - ghost

Our guide was again brilliant and made everthing come to life much to the delight of the kids.smiley - yikes

We made our weary way home exhausted but happy.smiley - yawn

smiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzz

On Monday we again did our best to be out the door quite early to *do* Oxford Street ...... OMG that place has to be hell on earth.smiley - devil But first we stopped off at the Breakfast Club to see if we could catch any famous folk in for a coffee (my neice used to work there on her days off).... but no-one we recognised turned up - however, we did get a scrumptious breakfast and a great welcome.smiley - cool

By 4.30 we were ready for an ambulance out of Oxford Street - stopped at TGI Friday's for our dinner first. Suitably refreshed we headed off to the Apollo Theatre to see Wicked.smiley - witch

Well, while LotR was a story with some music - Wicked was a musical show and it was just full to the brim of smiley - magic. The cast were tremendous, the music was enough to give us goosebumps and the show was uplifting, beautiful, and really what the musical theatre is all about, and what a clever story.smiley - wow We were all gobsmacked smiley - puff and my neice was seeing it for the third time. Lickily, the credit card smiley - fairy was with us and everyone managed to get all the memorabilia we could carry - hoodies, tshirts, books, badges, cds. We're still singing those songs.smiley - laugh

Then it was off home for a few beers and bed.smiley - yawn

smiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzzsmiley - zzz

Tuesday it was packing, lunch at the Harvester and smiley - bus to the airport. Plane was delayed for about 20mins, but otherwise the journey home was uneventful.smiley - zen

The weather was lovely (except Tuesday), the hospitality was great, the shows were awesome and overall I'd just like to thank everyone involved.smiley - hug

My feet may never be the same though ....

Money-making Scheme??

Well, not quite the normal Sunday. I had to take a trip to the airport to collect my brother and his wife who were coming home from their holidays.smiley - cool

Everything was normal on the way - about 2 million orange cones along the road - closing lanes and creating a contra-flow - and no-one at all working on the road.smiley - rolleyes

Still, we got to the airport just when they had arrived at the front door - but we couldn't get near them. We were in a looooooooong queue of traffic, we could see them alright but the traffic was barely moving.smiley - erm

Eventually we spoke with a gentleman in a yellow vest who informed us ..... 'Security - no pick-ups at the door, drop-offs only'. smiley - doh

'That's daft' says I 'Where do we go then'?smiley - huh

'To the pick-up car park' says he. smiley - 2cents

'What's the point'? says I, 'We can see them ... look, they're standing there waiting for us'.

'Sorry' says he 'We are on high alert expecting a terrorist attack - after Glasgow'.smiley - erm

'Look' says I 'we've had 30 years of terrorism and I've never seen anything like this smiley - steam'

'Different sort of terrorism' says he 'suicide bombers, you know'.smiley - doh

Meanwhile, the kid had phoned our passengers and they walked the 50ft to our car - where they loaded their lugguage and we were able to extricate ourselves from the queue and drive past where they had just been standing - and make for home.smiley - puff

I'd like to suggest that any terrorist picking an airport to display in would be wiser to pick one OTHER THAN Belfast airport - if the said terrorist were to manage to perform the 12 point turn required to find themselves facing the door of the terminal and drive through the metal barrier in through the doors - they would be confronted by a vast empty hallway ...... not really the smartest way to waste a life.smiley - rolleyes

Meanwhile the airport authority are coining it in - forcing people to pay £1 for car-parking while picking-up friends and family - call me an old cynic, but it all smacks of somebody making a mint out of someone else's misfortune.smiley - grr

15/16 Good Effort

It's only me crowing again.smiley - blush

To-day my 16th solo effort has hit the Front Page. Ok it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it got a response from one reader which is always nice.smiley - cheers

This set me thinking.smiley - headhurts

I've looked through all 16 of my entries and they have all (bar one) had comments ..... and better still most of the comments have been good.smiley - winkeye

It's really nice when people take the trouble to comment, so in future I'm not just going to read the entries - I'm going to make an effort to say something (something nice) about them.smiley - ok

Happy Non-Birthday

Today was the best non-birthday I've had for quite a while, and it started off so badly.smiley - bigeyes

We slept in, which meant running around like a lunatic and trying to beat the traffic to get to work just 15 mins late.smiley - sleepy

Then I get an email from a friend who tells me they loved Size Zero, but really loved Ed Gein - who hasn't even hit the front page yet.smiley - cool

Shortly after that one of my colleagues brought me a beautiful bunch of flowers in a lovely little glass vase ...... just for being nice.smiley - cheerup

Then about an hour later another colleague brought me a lovely box of chocolate buns from Asda ...... just because?smiley - drool

I don't know what's going on here, but I like it, and it completely turned around what could have been just another day.smiley - boing
