Exploding Rats
Posted Mar 8, 2002
Last week of Arena. Won two, lost one. To Luke again. Beat Michael and Tom's Black/Red, proving that I am the Black/Red king.
I also tried out my Black/White Exploding Rats deck (it doesn't explode and -according to Tom- there ain't no Rats in it). The general idea is anti-black stuff and life gaining stuff with Crypt Rats and Spirit Link. It once got me up to 88 life. I played two type 2 matches with it and won the first 2-0 and the second 2-1. The first was against Luke (tehe). Considering I originally thought of it as a funny non-achiever, I think that’s quite good.

Oh.......dear......

It turns out that I've made a bit of a mistake. Rather than changing fifteen cards a week, I was supposed to change fifteen cards IN TOTAL. If I had been restricted that way in the Odyssey Arena, I wouldn't have won a single game. What this means is rather than change fifteen cards this week, I've got to change a load back...
To keep: Terminate, Tahngarth, Stone Rain and the Nightscapes. That’s thirteen cards. I think Malevolent Awakening and a fourth Petravark would also be beneficial.
I can only take out the spells that combine with the other cards really badly. The Soul Scourge gets more of a look in this time because I have recently learnt that if you play it then sacrifice it, a player looses three life permanently. Here’s what I ended up with
Main deck
12 Swamp
9 Mountain
2 Tainted Peak
2 Firebolt
4 Stone Rain
1 Demolish
2 Malevolent Awakening
2 Flame Burst
4 Terminate
4 Nightscape Familiar
3 Mesmeric Fiend
3 Barbarian Outcast
1 Gravegouger
1 Pardic Collaborator
4 Petravark
3 Faceless Butcher
1 Tahngarth, Talruum Hero
1 Chainer, Dementia Master
1 Petradon
Sideboard
2 Rancid Earth
2 Pyromania
1 Shades Form
1 Caustic Tar
1 Flaming Gambit
2 Temporary Insanity
1 Enslaved Dwarf
1 Slithery Stalker
1 Pardic Collaborator
3 Soul Scourge
Thankfully it's over all effectivness hasn't been affected too much. The Soul Scourges have the ability to remove Psycatogs which should prove quite useful.
I learnt what I was doing wrong last Thursday. Won three, lost one. I hate Upheaval.
I have been working in what I call my McArthur deck. Tell you about it later.
Bye.

Malevolent Penumbra
Posted Feb 26, 2002
Here's my idea for a Penumbra deck:
11 Forest
11 Swamp
3 Lay of the Land
2 Stream of Life
2 Diabolic Tutor
1 Parallel Evolution
1 Symbiotic Deployment
4 Malevolent Awakening
1 Verdant Succession
4 Llanowar Elf
4 Urborg Elf
3 Urborg Initiate
4 Llanowar Dead
4 Penumbra Bobcat
4 Penumbra Kavu
1 Penumbra Wurm
What do you think?

Penumbra
Posted Feb 26, 2002
Well, it had to happen sooner or later.
I just had an idea (not particularly original I must admit) for a Penumbra creature based deck. Unfortunately it requires all of my Malevolent Awakenings. I can get a couple more but it looks like my Malevolent Nightmare deck will be discontinued at the end of the Arena. Sigh.

Wreck and ruin.
Posted Feb 23, 2002
An evening of frenzied deck altering later, here's what I got:
Main deck
11 Swamp
12 Mountain
4 Firebolt
4 Stone Rain
2 Malevolent Awakening
4 Terminate
1 Charcoal Diamond
1 Fire Diamond
4 Nightscape Familiar
4 Mesmeric Fiend
2 Barbarian Outcast
4 Petravark
4 Flametongue Kavu
1 Tahngarth, Talruum Hero
1 Chainer, Dementia Master
1 Petradon
Sideboard
1 Demolish
2 Earth Rift
1 Haunting Echoes
4 Flame Burst
2 Star Compass
2 Emblazoned Golem
3 Faceless Butcher
Again, not much changed. I'd like to change the 12th mountain for a Charcoal Diamond or a Fire Diamond because:
a) Petravark can't remove it
b) Desolation Angel can't destroy it
c) I can play more than one a turn, and this deck needs to be destroying enemy lands quickly
As I said earlier, Tahngarth should shred enemy Nightmares. I was thinking of removing Chainer because of my deck's anti-land focus. But yesterday he resurrected a Vampire Dragon and thus re-earned his place in my deck.
I've used the new modifications in a couple of games, and it seems to work fine. Of course, I've only changed one non-land main deck card so I shouldn't have expected major changes in performance. The sideboard Flame Bursts were intended to be used against enemy Nightmares in place of the Mesmeric Fiends, but I tend not to bother. Could Flame Burst remove Vampiric Dragon?
Be seeing you.
