Hi
Welcome back. You obviously had a good time though I have NO idea what you did!. Did you go for walks, swim, read, laze, eat lots of Devonshire cream(I love it).? My time has been fraught but interesting. Yesterday we spent the day at the sea. It was quite beautiful. Blue sky, cool breeze and I must say that I longed to get into the water. Short of being catapaulted in by a cannon this was not possible. Like you I shall be watching the Open. It does matter about my dish because I can no longer have digital. And with Digital I could watch Tiger for the full 18 holes, or have a choice of five other people/holes to watch. So I am hoping they will come and put the dish in the right direction soon.
A big AR1
Welcome back !!
Lurcher Posted Jul 19, 2002
Hello AR!!
Well, we did most thing on your list, except for swimming!
Cliff-top walks, watching boats/ships coming and going, plus,of course, frequently sampling the locally brewed ales..
You`ll see plenty of Tiger, dish or no dish!!
As befits the finest golfer in the world, he gets full coverage, sometimes, I`m afraid, to the exclusion of other competitors. And the link man Steve Ryder, must have a fixation with him, as he manages to turn the conversation to Tiger, whoever he might be interviewing !!
Such is the price Tiger pays; I`m sure he would appreciate a bit less attention from the adoring fans, sometimes though.
Fraught but interesting?
There`s a story there, I`m sure
Take care

Hi dear of direct lupine dscent.
and now you are off to roam the Yorkshire moors (aka golf courses)
I was sad not to see Tiger playing bettter; but it must be a dreadful strain to have the media (and crowds ) around you all the time. Significant I think that the four who nearly won were virtually on their own most of the time.
It has been a busy week. Time goes by so quickly. I had a visit from a very dear friend of mine - between the two of us we are over 150 years old- a frightening thought!!. It was wonderful to see her and to reminisce (gosh I cannot remember how to spell it!) As they knew my son before he fell ill it was great to receive them as they knew what he was like before.
I had an urgent phone call from the Social Services this week. It appears that my poor brother has got diabetes very badly. It was diagnosed last year and he has refused to believe it and to treat it.Now his blood sugar has gone up alarmingly. They wanted me to be responsible for testing his blood. He does'nt even answer the phone or the door bell when I ring(He is quite a recluse. He only comes here when he wants to.And of course I take him on holiday because he cannot manage it on his own)
So now I have offered to cook for him as well - the problem is getting it to his flat. It is sad when some people are afflicted with so many ills.
I loved the meet. You have not mentioned it. You have been so busy fielding all the extraordinary things that have been going on on you thread. I nearly signed off it, but decided that I really was a fan of yours so could not do it. But I signed off the haunted castle one as I felt quite an intruder there!!.
Take care, drive slowly - did you know that there is a family of wolves in the Staes. Are they related? a big Ar1
Welcome back !!
Lurcher Posted Jul 28, 2002
Hello AR!
I am very sorry to hear about your brother, particularly as his refusal to accept that he has the condition has undoubtably not helped in establishing control.
Is it going to be possible for you to assume responsibility for blood testing? To say nothing of providing his meals?
Dear AR, you have to take so much on, I`m sure you`ll somehow cope, but surely the Social Services could be of more help, given that you have such difficulty with access, etc ?
The meet. Just before I went up to Yorkshire to see my son, I saw some photographs of you...looking not a day over fifty!
I suppose we all build a picture in our minds of what someone would look like, and when I saw your photo`s, I thought I`d read the captions wrong !!
Ah yes, the activity on some threads can become complicated! But things have a way of evening themselves out, I find. It`s not always as frenetic , thank goodness!
Also, I sometimes inadvertently miss some entries, as when they pass off a page it`s easy to lose `em. I think some of the "action" will ease off, at least it will as far as I`m concerned, as I dont anticipate spending so much time on h2g2 for a while!
Time to sign off now AR..been a bit short of sleep of late...got some catching up to do <
Take care, I do hope you can find a way to cope with the new stresses that your dear brother`s illness are imposing.

Very dear
Thank you for your gallant remarks. I never look at the mirror now - in fact I do not have one at the correct height. It is much easier that way. So when I saw the photographs I thought "My goondess - is that what I look like", and promptly looked away hoping that no-one would see it. The trouble is that we all get old - and I certainly do not like to look at myself. In RL that is. In virtual life I am the queen of the may and still sweet sixteen. !!Anway, they were super photos that Gnoman took and the camera he used was a real gem.
glad you are enjoying some watery golf. You know my friend, if you had as much McLurchers as you claim to have, you would be there with that unfortunate Georgie, having yourself repaired.!!
I have been watching the swimming - some of it, and the athletics. I am at the moment trying to get the plans for having the flat re-decorated, and getting some structure into our lives so that I can get a hot meal to my brother every day. It seems to be working alright althoug I do not have time for much else.
A goodnight Go well dear friend. AR1
Welcome back !!
Lurcher Posted Aug 2, 2002
Hello AR
I can imagine the work involved!
Perhaps I do over-indulge with the McLurchers..trouble is you see, it`s so cheap
I`ve enjoyed watching the Games too, I think that Manchester has done a brilliant job of staging them. I was born there, many years ago!!
Some stars have risen, the odd one or two eclipsed, all in all it`s been a great spectacle, despite some true Manchester weather
Talking of which, I played in a local Seniors Tournament yesterday, and it poured with rain for the entire game. The course should have been closed really, it wasn`t fit to play. The greens weren`t too bad, but everywhere else was waterlogged.
Needless to say we didn`t win, I think the eventual winners were a school of dolphins
Hope the redecoration plans are taking shape, and that you`ll soon be operating in a more practical environment.
Take care love, see you soon

Very dear of direct lupine descent,
Thank you for your letter. Glad to know that you also enjoyed the Games. the swimming was so exciting. They all looked so fit and well. It horrified me because their times were so much faster than when I was swimming. In my day there was only one race for backstroke and that was 150 yards. an impossible distance. Now there are 50 metres, 100 metres and 200 metres. We did of course also have the medley although butterfly was not yet an accepted stroke - as far as I can remember.
What I am so surprised about is how they go so fast bobbing up and down like corks when swimming breastroke. I would like to know the aerodynamics of that.
They were soaked last night. I thought that the wonderful human configurations which they made were inspired. But I got a bit tired at the end.
sorry you were rained off on the course. I think that one needs a good 19th hole when playing golf in England!!. an affectionate AR1 <schooloffish)
Welcome back !!

Hello love!
This is just a short note, but I had to pop in and say how delighted I am that you have gathered so many friends about you.
It isn`t surprising though; your genuine interest in other people comes through in all your conversations.
You do embody the true spirit of H2G2.
And I do keep an eye on you, you know
from your old pal

Hi dear of direct lupine descent
Thank you for your nice letter. there are so many fantastically interesting people on h2g2. I could spend all my time talking to them. I have just mentioned your name to another newcomer called Dragonfly. She has got a wonderful receipe for purple (I called it red) mashed potato and so I looked up her home page. She sounds an incredibly courageous person.
Are your friends teasing you when they have that horrid smiley - I will not write it down - I wonder who on earth invented it. It is one we could do without!!. I have had someone in yesterday who helped me mend a whole lot of things like leaking hot water taps, replacing light bulbs, fixing switches and helping me measure the kitchen. I have been trying to design my new kitchen on the Internet. the problem is my measurements are much bigger than the one of the actual kitchen!!. But another guy came round this afternoon with the most delicious name which I cannot possibly say on this thread.!!. I want to laugh each time I call him that!. Go well and take care of yourself. (ncidentally not so much of that old - I am old enough to be your mother in law.! With a great big AR1

Very dear Lurcher,(of direct lupine descent)
Would you please go to thread A806500 and A810640.
On the one you will find an invitation to the Harvest Festival that Titania is arranging.
On the other you will find a programme of events.
I thinik it would be fun for the Also Ran Fan friends club to challenge the Lurcher Fan Club to a tug of war!!
That is of course providing you can all drag yourselves away from your McLurchers and all the other which you imbibe at the 19th!!. Also if any of your fan club would like to enter a virtual cake for my cake stall - or preserves for the preserve stall I would be grateful to receive them.
Do say you will come. It would be great to nearly meet you!!. AR1
Welcome back !!
Lurcher Posted Aug 24, 2002
Hi AR11
I`ll do what I can to raise a team for the tug of war, if I can keep `em sober long enough
As regards the cake, Maybe Michele or Batty could produce one..I`ll see. My culinary skills exclude me from competing, being a professional and all..(winkeye>
Keep smiling
L

Hi dear Lurcher,(of direct lupine descent)
Thanks for trying to get some opposition together from your fan club for the great tug of war.!!
As for your professional culinary skills how about a little pickled gopher for the "Pickles and jam" table? You must have an idea as to how you can do that!!
Salaams and

Hi dear Lucher of direct lupine descent.,
Where are you? I need help and encouragement in this HUGE task of organising the cake competition!!. I am practically abandoning the idea of a tug of war as everyone seems to be away.
Go well and keep well, a fond AR1
Welcome back !!
Lurcher Posted Aug 28, 2002
Sorry AR
I can`t be much help to anyone at the moment.
It`s as much as I can manage to visit h2g2, let alone contribute anything of any value.
Depression, as you probably know, reduces daily life to an exercise in survival.. and sometimes you don`t much care if you win or lose.
That`s how it is at the moment. I`ve been here many times before, and I know it passes, it`s a question of hanging on.
The thing is..it gets harder.
Talk soon
L

Dear of direct lupine descent,
Will you kindly go back to being yourself! A full blown magnificent wolf!.And do not forget the yeast tablets. I am taking eight a a day since my last bout. It really does help. You said you were going to try it. Keep well and know you are much loved. with a huge big and much AR1 swimming her way wearily to bed.
Welcome back !!
Lurcher Posted Nov 22, 2002
Now don`t faint....
Yes, it`s me,,as ever was!
Sorry to have been so long in talking personally to you, it certainly isn`t because I`d forgotten you.
Truth is, I haven`t contributed much to h2g2 for quite a while, just the odd entry now and again. When I`m on, it`s invariably only briefly, just to keep the place ticking over, I suppose. I`m afraid the days of long hours in front of the screen have passed for the time being.
There have been other things claiming time, been quite busy work-wise, although that has eased, this last week.
A few problems have raised their heads which have had to be dealt with, one of which is a family matter which has caused much concern of late.
Not that I can do much about it, in a practical way, only give support whenever we can. Can`t say any more than that, but it has diverted interest in h2g2 somewhat.
Times change, AR, and me with them, but not so much, really
I have, however, been keeping an eye on you! Following your adventures, etc, culminating in your sojourn in the bedroom
I hope you will soon be back in control of your household, particularly the kitchen !
Nice to see you calling in at the 19th hole from time to time...I really must show up more often myself!
Take care
A king sized
L
So good to hear from you

Very dear of direct lupine descent,
It was so good to have your news. What a giddy giddy life I lead. From bedroom to bathroom, to kitchen, to my very untidy study and then off on TWO day triops to France. I have decided to go on a regular basis in the New Year. I just love hearing French being spoken around me and being able to communicate with everyone without any problem and they are very friendly and kind to old biddies like me.
So sorry to hear of the family problems. Hope they sort themselves out. No golf at the moment - I expect. Far too wet and cold I have watched a bit of the Australian golf but my goodness the English courses look so much better. Now is the time for my favoureite winter sports of downshill and sky junmping. I am even getting interested in cross countryskiing. I have bewn obliged to be a couch potato because my hands have been so sore I have been unable even to type - and had to get our meals from Meals on Wheels. Anyway I am coping a bit better now and will be going to the specialist next Thursday. Hopefully he will be able to put me onto a new drug which apparently is a miracle drug and will make me feel better instantly.
I have spent a long time on the web so must now go and make some soup for supper. I send you a big affectionate AR1
