Hi everyone! In case you've missed seeing my eyeballs around this weekend, I'm back! And if you haven't, well too bad!
In the past two days, I have moved about 150 miles east of where I was before to State College. I'm living in a graduate dorm with a girl who has never been on her own before, a lady from China, and another one with a Korean name that hasn't shown up yet. Unless she knows how to cook and clean, I'm probably going to be the domestic goddess of the situation.
You should be frightened by this.
I'm one page through a two page to-do list and my deadline is tomorrow, so hootoo is going to be curtailed for another day at least, until I can figure out directions around this massive campus.
I got a digital camera for my birthday, so http://scandrea.buzznet.com is going to be updated more frequently. I have a few things on there already, but hopefully I'll be able to compile a Penn State album.
Another thing- my laptop battery is almost shot, so things are going to be a bit iffy with that until I get a new one. If you're on MSN with me and I suddenly disappear, that's probably why.
My participation in my RPs should be continued uninterrupted- as soon as I can actually get online in my dorm room!

Hi Scandrea,
Congrats on passing the subs test. Jodan's right - they do make us do stuff!

Congrats on the whole grad school thing...welcome to "what was I thinking?"
But have fun. And time management...that's key!

Thanks for the advice! I've already had a "what the hell was I thinking moment." Actually, I think I've had five in a row. Is that bad?
Anyway, the internet is now working, so after I get the parking pass and straighten my insurance out, I'll be ready to go!

Scandrea, it's not "bad" to have those moments...just don't let them snowball into angst. Grad school is as different from undergrad as undergrad was to high school...it's a big adjustment, and you can really get crazy with it.
You need anything, you let me know. After all, one of my jobs as the department fellow is to make sure that all first years at UCI are making the adjustment well, so I've got lots of tips and tricks to make things easier.
Okay, now I've gone and proven myself a geek again.
And for a really, really good book on the whole subject, get "Getting What You Came For" by Robert Peters. It's clear, concise, and I wish I'd found it before I'd already gotten halfway through!

Go ahead! We're all geeks here!
Anyway, this isn't your typical department, I don't think. We went out tonight to see a band at a local bar, with a field trip at 8 AM tomorrow morning. Remind me: I was thinking, "Oh, hey it'll be fun to go and meet people, have a few beers..." Tomorrow is a party at my advisors, and Saturday is a party with the phrase in the invitation: "Slip and slide in your own vomit."
We are all grad students here. But we're geologists!
