Greetings and Salutations
I'm 33 years old, married to a beautiful woman and knackered. No not for 'that' reason, our daughter Esme Chatherine, was born at the start of the year and I have not had a full nights sleep since.
Sleep, what a wonderful word, a soft, warm squishy sort of word. The sort of word that, if it were a piece of confection would undoubtedly be a peach melba or perhaps a large slice of Black Forrest Gateaux...
But I digress or should that be ramble. I have no intention of telling anyone what I do for a living, it's too terrible to mention and always elicits the response "That's interesting". You know when you are at a really great party and if you are anything like me you tend to attract the the great unwashed, strange, or down right weird. All I have to do is mention my job and get the response "Oh! That's interesting" and I never see them again.
On the subject of asking people what they do for a living, I was once on a train. Yes, I know, very foolish but there you go. A youngish man sat down next to me, on what, as it turns out to be, the last seat on the train. I spent the first few minutes of this encounter minding my own business, as you do, but could not help noticing that his hands were covered with soil. A few more minutes passed and my curiosity got the better of me. We exchanged pleasantries, the usual stuff. Finally I asked what he did for a living. He gleefully informed me that he was a grave digger. I retained my composure and responded with "Oh! That's interesting". Did I mention that there were now no free seats on the train. I was trapped. He explained in great detail how he had spent the day exhuming bodies from a churchyard that was due to be demolished to make way for a new housing estate.
What can we glean from this story. Never, ever, travel by train and never ask what people do for a living.
I intend to use my journal to vent my spleen from time to time so watch this space.
