From a distance, I have a hard time telling cucumbers and zucchini aparts.

I agree, though some zucchinis are stripey.

I had an uncle who was much-feared in his neighborhood in August. There was an empty lot next to his house, and he converted it to a garden. He always had too many tomatoes and zucchinis in August, so he would go door to door trying to unload some of his surplus.

Maybe you've never known anyone who already had bushels of them donated by other neighbors and passers-by.

Nope. Not bushels.
An elderly lady my parents knew used to call my mother with odd requests. She would never identify herself, just start talking. She was a real Southern character.
One day she called: 'Do you have any bees?'
My mother: 'Why, er, I'm not sure.'
Mrs H: 'I don't have nary a bee. Something's wrong.'
This lady was prescient - the bee problem wasn't known then.
Another time she called and complained that she wished she had some zucchini. My mother bagged up zucchini and sent my father over. He came home chuckling.
My mother: 'Did you give her the zucchini?'
Dad:'Yep.'
Mother: 'Why didn't she have any zucchini? Did she forget to plant any?'
Dad: 'Oh, she planted plenty. But all hers was in the freezer. She wanted some fresh.'

I've noticed several on Amazon (but do not wish to facilitate advertising on this thread). It seems there are some major composers who did works for it.

For all I know, he's a fine individual, but there are limits to the appeal of that sound, ne-c'est pas?

To me, that goes with 30s scifi - art deco costumes made of tinfoil...
