The llama, the rock concert, and the church (a dream)
paulh, vaccinated against the Omigod Variant Started conversation Dec 31, 2005
The dream starts as I am walking to work. It is a winter day, yet I am only wearing a short-sleeved white shirt and a pair of jeans shorts. I am not wearing shoes or socks.
As I approach my workplace, I see that it has morphed into a church. Thousands of people are coming out of it, because they have just been to a rock concert there.
Then I see the llama, walking behind me. I start to hurry, because the llama is big enough toe at me. However, the llama keeps on at its own slow pace, apparently not interested in me in any way.

Sorry, there's a typo there.
I did not mean "the llama is big enough toe at me"
Instead, I meant "the llama is big enough to eat me"

Poor Paul.... the Llama "apparently not interested in me in any way"....
I had a nightmare the other night.
It started with a lot of people being called into a local school auditorium for a meeting. Apparently, there was a local gang (in reality, some sort of Irish gang, complete with stereotypical Irish accents) had become ticked off because the majority of the locals had defied some edict from the gang. They were bent on retribution.
The doors were closed and locked and the gang began beating the people, which included men, women, children, babies, and the elderly, with bats and other objects.
I wasn't one of the "targets" of this retribution. For some reason, I was there to "witness" the retribution.
However, as the events deteriorated, people started hiding our all over the school, which was an old Catholic school, and the thugs began beating anyone they could get their hands on. Eventually, they were simply torturing people. I ended up trying to find someplace to hide and eventually found a tall closet which had a hidden access to a crawlspace and hid out in there.
Just as I woke up, though, someone found my hiding-place.

I worry about you people, seriously.
Paul - Elektra and I wish to reassure you that llamas are vegetarians.
Perhaps a zoology text would be good bedside reading.
Mudhooks, I don't know what to say.

Llamas going to a rock concert at a church... now that's something.
Sounds like an interesting band!

Well, never done this before! Never heard of a dream of llamas either - lots of weird things but, sadly, no llamas. How long till new year for you?

Given the context--the llama, the rock fans in pre-Columbian costume, and the ancient church--I think the dream took place in Peru, and the rock fans were pretending to be Incas. Now, where else but a dream could I get a free tour of the Andes?

I'm sure that's true for llamas in the real world. However, in a dream all bets are off. That, plus the counter-intuitive nature of dreams. I could easily turn into a vegetable in the next scene .
Anyway, it's great to see you again, dmitri. Long time no see.

True, true - just don't dream you're a tasty carrot, or something.
Oh, and Happy New Year in advance. In case you're someplace more interesting come midnight.

Yes, churches are odd places for rock concerts, the funeral scene in "Rent" notwithstanding. The name of the band was Incasynca

Good thing the beastie dawdled rather than eating you, Paul. It appears that you've had a nocturnal visitation of the Dally Llama.

My ex had a run-in with horses on his uncle's farm many years ago.
He was crossing the paddock, heading towards the barn. The horses turned and started walking after him. He sped up a bit and the horses followed suit. He sped up again.... the horses did, too.
Eventually, he was running, hell bent for leather with the horses quickly gaining on him. He finally got to the barn door and made it inside. The horses stopped and wandered off.
His uncle pointed out that had he just kept walking at a normal pace, the horses would just have walked after him.
It's a game horses like to play with unsuspecting green-horns.

Horses? I saw plenty of those this afternoon. I saw "Brokeback Mountain" at the cinema. Rather a sad, tragic movie.

Definitely.
I had read the story it was based on, in a collection of stories by Annie Proulx. The film adaptation respected the sensitive material. The acting is superb. The film has already collected a fair number of nominations for awards.
The characters seemed so real to me that when Jack Twist died toward the end, I felt as if I had lost my best friend. I felt bad for the wives who didn't know, at first, that their husbands were gay. Once they did find out, they had no way to know what to do, because such things just didn't happen, or people didn't talk about it. In sixties or seventies Wyoming, to be openly gay was to stand a good chance of being murdered. To be secretly gay was to risk being observed, or to have one's lies found out. Jack probably *was* murdered, though the chances of bringing those responsible to justice were small.
But mostly the story is built around the two main characters, who had no idea what was coming at them when they were hired to watch a flock of sheep in the wilderness on Brokeback Mountain. The scenery is spectacular. I couild understand why Jack would want his ashes sprinkled on the Mountain...
