No, but then again, you don't get crap about crystal therapy either. Like I said, it wouldn't hurt h2g2 at all if it got back to its roots. If it simply focussed on conveying facts people might actually be glad that they learned, then I'm sure even I could forgive the wilder stylistic excesses of some of our authors.

Good old FM
Stylistic excess? I have no idea who he's talking about. Do you, guys?
The roots aren't entirely what they're cracked up to be, mind

Myself, I'm for the Broad Church approach, which unfortunately means finding room for crystal therapists and vampire slayers too.

I think that's a brilliant little entry, it tells me all i need to know about cocktail sticks, and it's even entertaining. I'm sure that you'd not get away with an entry like this if you submitted it today, though. You'd have to mention how problematic plastic is, zthe landfill caused by cocktail sticks, etc pp.

Well, I've gone for the actual tourist of the world approach recently Which, me thinks is actually more inclined towards the roots of h2g2. Although they may have been a bit dyed from what you found there Pin...
Although I sort of quite like that Entry, in a funny kind of way.
Anyway, I must admit, I don't care what gets written, let's just get something into the EG or it may be looking down a barrel. Perhaps that barrel is more like 6 months to a year long, but it's there. But then, perhaps it always has been.

I'm in favour of a 'broad church' as well. I'd just like to be sure that I'm sharing the same beliefs about the Church's mission with all the others in the congregation. And yes, Pin, I *was* talking about you. Make it readable and interesting and truly informative and I'll back you 100%.
I keep on wanting to write an entry about this place (which Matt will know all about, I'm sure): http://www.attenboroughnaturecentre.co.uk/ . But I'd really like to make it distinctive in some kind of way, not just another by-the-numbers entry. And http://www.codeplex.com/guidedog is taking up too much of my time. The sad thing is that if people like me don't write the like of the former, then eventually there will be no point in the time I have spent writing the latter. So, if you're prepared to help with the latter, then drop around to the website and give me your support.

Thanks. I'd like to help, but as you can see, I haven't a clue about those things. I'll happily test it once it's finished, though.

What exactly do you mean by 'stylistic excess'? And what kind of entries are people looking for? The traddition of the guide from the books seems to suggest that you ought to be able to look to it for knowledge on more or less any subject, especially ones about which Peter Jones can sound amusingly bewildered- is that what we're aiming at?

It was meant to be an ironic statement. People have very varying ideas about what fits the Writing Guidelines
